Swine Flu Vaccine Closeout
By Dominika Pszczółkowska

(Gazeta Wyborcza) Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France - European governments increasingly trying to sell influenza A/H1N1 vaccine, of which they bought too much. The case evokes heated controversy among others on the Seine River. Disproportion between the number of vaccines purchased and consumed there is huge - 94 million doses purchased, 5 million used. Did the government panicked? Wanted to quietly support the pharmaceutical companies? Or it only showed a caution against the danger, which seemed huge? In autumn, when Polish authorities decided not to buy vaccines, media in Western Europe counted patients, predicted a huge number of cases, recommended not to kiss. Authorities - not only because of public pressure, but under the influence of WHO recommendations - ordered a large quantity of vaccines. Queues formed, but the epidemic has proved weaker than expected, France, Germany, Britain ceased to turn up for the vaccine. It also turned out that one dose will do, and not - as initially thought - two doses of vaccine. The governments are left with large amount of unused doses. The authorities of the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland already in autumn stated they would be willing to sell part of the vaccine. Considering it are also the British and Italians. After the New Year it turned out that a large number of vaccines is also to be sold in France, which spent 870 million euros for them. "The Ministry of Health turned for two months in a warehouse in which the A/H1N1 vaccines were overdosed. Disproportion between the number ordered and used in vaccines must cause controversy" - writes "La Nouvelle Republique. Sud-Ouest" strikes even harder, noting that Health Minister Roselyn Bachelot has worked in the pharmaceutical industry. "870 million hurriedly transferred to four big pharmaceutical companies can no longer be called carefulness, it is a plan to revive this branch of industry" - says this regional newspaper. However according to the leftist "Libération" it was impossible not to make a maximum confronting an unknown virus A/H1N1. Newspaper criticizes rather chaotic way of distribution and that the French went for it. One of the companies, Sanofi Pasteur, which accepted the order of half of the 94 million vaccines, ststed it is willing to rethink the contract, if the government so requests. Part of the vaccines has not yet been delivered. Paris defends itself, saying authorities of Qatar and Egypt want to buy the vaccine, but this is a very small part of them. In France 200 people died of the swine flu, many times less than that every year die of ordinary flu. Worldwide virus killed more than 11.5 thousand people, mainly in the U.S. and Brazil. Poland won’t buy. Our government is not equipped himself for the vaccine because - as explained to the minister of health - no producer wanted to take responsibility for any possible side effects of the vaccine and its introduction into the pharmacy. So it can not be considered a safety product - said Min. Kopacz. Now, when Western Europe is left with millions of vaccines, officials triumph. - Clogging of the vaccine is problem of their governments. You can see now that it is common sense and merit approach, which we presented in the Pandemic Committee. Swine flu virus is several times less virulent than the seasonal influenza virus and the infections wave dropped. I do not know why it led to a situation where everyone felt very vulnerable - v-ce Health Minister Adam Fronczak told us yesterday. In early December, Citizen Rights Spokesman issued to the National Prosecutor to initiate a national inquiry into the lack of vaccine. Minister Ewa Kopacz was blamed to bring the epidemiological risks. According to data of the Chief Sanitary Inspector, in the week of 16-22 December 2009 in Poland, there were nearly 39 thousand incidences of flu that is about 38 percent less than in the previous week. In Poland, there were 116 deaths among people infected with A/H1N1.
