An international team has discovered a fast-moving deep ocean current near Antarctica that may help researchers monitor the impact of climate change on the world's oceans.
The Australian and Japanese scientists who found the current say it has the volume of 40 Amazon Rivers and is the fastest deep ocean current ever found.
According to a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the current is a key part of a global ocean circulation pattern that helps control the planet's climate.
It moves at an average of 20 centimeters per second, carrying over 12 million cubic meters of Antarctica's dense, oxygen-rich water every second, Steve Rintoul of the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Center told Reuters.
Rintoul explained that the current carries the water to the deep ocean basins around the Kerguelen Plateau in the southern Indian Ocean where it branches out.
This way it forms part of a much larger network, which distributes heat through the world's oceans.
"The deep current along the Kerguelen Plateau is part of a global system of ocean currents called the overturning circulation, which determines how much heat and carbon the ocean can soak up," Rintoul said.
