FBI targeting anti-war movement

Members of anti-war groups in the United States say they are being harassed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation because of their opposition to US-led wars.

"The FBI is harassing anti-war organizers and leaders, folks who opposed US intervention in the Middle East and Latin America," Minneapolis anti-war activists Mick Kelley told AP on Friday.

Early on Wednesday, the FBI raided eight homes in Minneapolis and Chicago as part of a terrorism investigation. They reportedly confiscated computer files, photographs, notebooks, and Kelley's diaries.

FBI spokesman Steve Warfield said evidence concerning material support for terrorism was being investigated. "We're not anticipating any arrests at this time," Warfield added.

Jess Sundin is another Minneapolis anti-war activist who has been searched by FBI agents. She also said that the searches were connected with the Minnesota Anti-War Committee's opposition to US military aid to Colombia and Israel, as well as its opposition to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"It's kind of outrageous that citizens of the United States could be targeted like this," Sundin noted.
Steff Yorek's home was also raided. He said the searches were conducted because of his opposition to US-led wars and the oppression of Palestinians.
He strongly denied involvement in any activities that could be linked to terrorism.
On September 21, the United States Justice Department accused the FBI of providing false and misleading statements on terrorism.
A report by the Office of the Inspector General says the FBI launched improper investigations into post-9/11 events in the United States, saying that the bureau labeled peaceful protests as acts of terrorism.
The report also cites a 2002 anti-war rally in Pittsburgh, which was linked to terrorism. It says the FBI used scant evidence to place members of the environmental group Greenpeace on a federal terrorism watch list.
The Justice Department has called on the FBI to review its policies, especially in regard to domestic terrorism cases.
