It's beginning to look a lot like winter in Newfoundland.
A storm system has brought significant amounts of snow to the island. In fact, Thursday was a record-breaking day for snowfall in St. John's.
“At least 29 cm has fallen in the city, and at one point, the snow was falling at a rate of six centimetres per hour,” says Gerald Cheng, a meteorologist at The Weather Network. “That total amount of snow not only breaks the November 24 record, but it also makes this St. John's snowiest November day on record.”
The last time the city saw this much snow in November was in 1980, when 25.3 cm fell on the 19th.
On Thursday, the wintery weather closed schools and prompted officials to pull public transit buses off the road. The early season snow storm also caught some drivers off guard. A tractor-trailer slid off the Trans-Canada Highway near Goobies Thursday morning, but the highway remained open.

Meanwhile,Maritimers are digging out after the same powerful storm swept through on Wednesday. Some places saw up to 40 cm of snow, which forced school cancellations and made driving conditions treacherous.

Winterizing your vehicle is crucial, as well as adjusting your driving habits once conditions deteriorate.
