Drone Footage Shows More Than 100 Whales Imprisoned In Underwater Jails

The Facts: Footage recently surfaced of more than 100 whales caught, trapped, and jailed, waiting to be sold in China for human entertainment purposes.

Reflect On: What right do we have to take living, breathing empathetic emotional beings trap them for our own desires? What type of environment are we growing up in that allows and caters to such behaviour? Are we living in harmony?

Recently, drone footage captured shots of over 100 whales trapped in secret underwater ‘jails.’ In total, 11 orcas and 90 beluga whales are illegally being held as captives in what activists are now calling a “whale jail.” It’s the largest number of marine animals to be held in such a way (that we know about), according to the  Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC), a UK-based wildlife charity.

Apparently, they are being kept to be sold off to ocean theme parks in China, at a large price. Each whale is estimated to be worth millions, and China has more than 60 marine parks, as well as more than a dozen currently under construction. There is a huge market, one where a number of individuals are sacrificing their own humanity for a profit. This is where empathy needs to come in, we need to feel, think and perceive like another animal. Our lack of ability to empathize with all beings can disconnect us from reality.

It’s a fair question to ask, should we be allowed to capture animals at all? Even for scientific purposes? Should we be limiting our study to ways in which the animals can be observed and studied in their natural environment? If we need a body to examine, can we can take a deceased one? Perhaps we can find more humane ways of going about our study?

Think about how you would feel if you were taken from your family and held against your will? Forced into a life that in no way reflects anything natural. Would you be extremely scared, depressed, and suicidal?
