羅馬尼亞回到70年代的冬季

羅馬尼亞回到70年代的冬季

Romania back to 1970s winters

Marius Bratu
Just let you know that these days in western and central Romania we face a severe snowy weather and climatological event. From Friday evening to Sunday morning has snowed heavy continuously, fortunately without blizzard.
We are back 70’s winters.
For example Timisoara city has got 42 cm official snow depth on the weather station platform but in Aria we have got up to 50 cm even 100 cm (more than 3 ft) as the maps show. The last Timisoara record 33 cm for December was reached in 2012 but our official records started in 1960-1961 measuring mainly average snow depth but not the deepest one. So we have a lack of records snow depth data from 60’s to 90’s.

This winter season started early, on 19th of November in Oltenia and Moldavia regions as you see on the third maps. Turning back to the last event, 50 000 housing and 50 settlements were in the dark for 2-3 days without electricity or heat, lots of flights canceled, railway disrupted due to heavy wet snow which broke plenty of trees, schools were closed for two days and roads buried in snow. Even water supply was a big problem and the merchants sold out all the shovels.
Our challenge now is to mitigate icy roads and the huge amounts of snow accumulated on the building roofs.
The harsh winter has just started. According with the last update,  a north polar vortex is approaching a new low-speed ever recorded since 1979 with unusual strong early Sudden stratospheric warming with huge consequences on tropospheric jet shifts and arctic mass displacement to low latitudes aria for the next 30-40 days.
