New research by the US’ Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) found the top 12 American billionaires have seen their combined wealth soar by 40 percent, from $283 billion to over $1 trillion since the health crisis began. The new total is more than the GDP of Belgium and Austria combined, and marks the first time it has hit the trillion mark.
Bezos and Gates are the biggest pandemic success stories so far, with the Amazon CEO increasing his wealth by $76 billion (68 percent) to $189.4 billion, and the Facebook CEO by $40.8 billion (75 percent) to $95.5 billion. So, the pandemic really has been the best of times, and the worst of times...
The report claims, ‘This is a disturbing milestone in the US history of concentrated wealth and power. This is simply too much economic and political power in the hands of 12 people. From the point of view of a democratic self-governing society, this represents an Oligarchic Twelve or a Despotic Dozen.’
