ZERO: Babylonian Invention

It appears that the Babylonians 3000 years ago, in their Base 60 system,

used a type of zero expressed by a "missing space".

With this, they knew the precise value of Root 2 to 6 decimal places 1.414212.... Amazing!

Historians are now arguing that the Vedas or Indian Race did not introduce the zero, it was the Sumerian race 3,000 BC.

eg, just like we have 10, 100, 1000 etc in our current Base 10 system

the Babylonians had 60, 60x60, 60x60x60 giving 60, 360, 21,600 etc in their Base 60 system.

Thus their number for say 147 is made up of 60x2 + 27, represented as 2,27.

But when we square this number 147 we get 21,609 which contains a zero.

So they expressed it as (60 cubed) + (60 squared) missing + 9

which is really 21,600 + 9 giving 21,609

written in their cuneiform script as 6,0,9 see diagram attached.

This example, that is taken from the Louvre collection in Paris, (A0-17264)

shows clearly that Babylonian sexagesimal or Base 60 system intelligently utilized the missing Place Value System,

honouring them as the Inventors of the humble Zero.

Without zero, there would be no technology as we know it today!

The ancient Babylonian tablet, known as Plimpton 322 was discovered by Edgar K. Banks, who later became the inspiration for the Indiana Jones movie series. The tablet discovered in Iraq almost 100 years ago, is made of clay and thought to be 3,700 years old. Banks sold it to George Plimpton for $10 but now the significance of the tablet and its importance to mathematics is starting to become more clear.

Two professors from the University of New South Wales, have worked on cracking the code and learned that trigonometry was discovered not by the Greeks, but by ancient Babylonians and the numbers of the Plimpton 322 are part of a trigonometric table. It is believed to be the foundation of trigonometry that uses ratios and not angles or circles. It is the work of pure genius and sheds a light on other ancient Babylonian tablets discovered by archaeologists.
