A team of scientists from the UK and New Zealand have taken a bold step forward in the fight against obesity: they’ve developed a device that deploys super-strong magnets to stop dieters opening their mouths. The device would be applied by dentists to the upper and lower molars before being sealed with a magnetic lock that some social media users have described as sharing a visual similarity to a torture device from the movie ‘Saw’. 

The contraption, called the DentalSlim, restricts the user’s ability to open their jaw more than 2mm. Initial tests were carried out on seven overweight women, who, for two weeks, followed a low-calorie liquid diet but were unable to eat any solid food. The participants were successful in losing on average 6.36kg (14lbs), but – as might have been predicted – complained about the discomfort and speech restrictions caused by the device, with several reporting that they felt ‘tense’ and ‘embarrassed’ at points during the trial.

The device has not been well received by industry professionals either. It has been criticized for offering a method of weight loss that neither retrains the dieter’s eating habits nor contributes to the search for a solution to the global obesity epidemic. The developers have defended their invention, however, claiming the DentalSlim was not intended to deliver long-term weight loss and, instead, would be used primarily by obese people required to rapidly lose weight in preparation for surgery and by diabetics seeking remission from their condition via a calorie-restricted diet.
