'News blackout' to hit Italy

Italian journalists say they will stage a "news blackout" to protest a proposed law that could hinder the media freedom in the European country.

Some 2,000 journalists filled Rome's Piazza Navonna on Wednesday to protest the move, and pledged a news blackout on July 9 to protest the law, which is seen as a threat to the free flow of information, The Boston Globe reported.

The Italian government has proposed a law that aims to limit the use of wiretaps in criminal investigations and severely punish the media and journalists who wrongfully publish details of a criminal investigation or wiretap conversation, a Press TV correspondent in Rome reported.

The proposal put forward by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's government is causing uproar among thousands of journalists who say "freedom of the press" is on the verge of becoming risky business in their country.
One of Italy's anti-Mafia judges has said such legislation would severely hamper organized crime investigations.
The law was proposed after leaks, concerning wiretap content, to the media either criminally implicated or embarrassed top officials, including the premier.
