Dresden, the capital of Germany’s Saxony state, has hit the local headlines after city council members declared a “Nazi emergency” in the city.

The councillors noted “with concern” that anti-democratic and “right-wing extremist attitudes and actions, including violence in Dresden, are occurring with increasing frequency." The statement titled “Nazi emergency?” was supported by 39 local lawmakers and opposed by 29.

“This city has a problem with Nazis,” said Max Aschenbach, a local MP from the satirical left-leaning ‘The Party’ (Die Partei), who introduced the motion. Beyond general calls for strengthening the “democratic everyday culture,” however, the document suggests few specific measures to tackle the apparent rise of the far-right.

The notion of a ‘Nazi emergency’ did not sit well with some of the councilors, though. Holger Hase from the Free Democratic Party argued it would tarnish the city’s image as it competes for the title of the 2025 European Culture Capital. Local MPs from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), who all voted against the resolution, called it “pure symbolism” and a “linguistic blunder.”

The lawmakers may have some reasons for concern, though, as, according to RAA Saxony, an NGO helping victims of far-right violence, the number of such attacks in Dresden grew from 52 to 60 per year between 2017 and 2018. The city is also known as the birthplace of the anti-immigrant and anti-Islamic PEGIDA movement that emerged amid a massive refugee wave in 2014 and still occasionally holds rallies in the city, even though attendance has greatly diminished since the height of the refugee crisis.

Germany’s eastern region of Saxony is also deemed to be a stronghold of the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which saw a significant popularity boost at the latest regional elections in September, where the party gained 27.5 percent of the votes – up from 17.8 percent in 2014.

While it has been accused of inciting violence against foreigners, an AfD office in the Saxony city of Doebeln was itself rocked by an explosion of an “unknown substance” that detonated outside. Three people were detained over the incident.

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Dresden to attend a women’s network meeting, where she as guest of honor gave a speech calling for equality everywhere.

But the German far-right movement Pegida, which stands for Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the Occident, decided to hold a rally at the eventas dozens booed her arrival.

Approximately 50 people shouted “go away” and “Merkel must go”, something the demonstrators repeatedly chant during appearances of the Chancellor.

Dresden police initiated preliminary proceedings against three participants.

One protestor went as far as imitating the Nazi salute. He is being investigated for the use of symbols of unconstitutional organisations.

Another demonstrator is being investigated for attempted grievous bodily harm, following after throwing a plastic bottle at a media representative.

A third demonstrator allegedly denied the Holocaust in a conversation with counter-demonstrators, according to police.

The man was temporarily taken into police custody and is being investigated for sedition.

The German Chancellor visited Dresden to take part in a meeting of Saxon scientists, women entrepreneurs, politicians and female executives from the judiciary and administration.

The women’s network was launched by Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer in March in order to promote a stronger exchange.

The visit is expected to be the penultimate appearance of Ms Merkel before the state election on September 1.

On August 31 she will be awarded an honorary doctorate in Leipzig.

Police in Germany have removed nearly 200 black crosses put up by far-right activists in the east of the country.

The spray-painted wooden crosses which allegedly mark the lives of Germans murdered by foreigners were fixed to road signs or planted at the roadside, with activists claiming thousands have been killed since 1990.

Germany recently admitted they do not know where the Jihadis are, and also confessed having “no plan” to deal with 120 others who are locked up in the Middle East.

A new intelligence reportreleased by Angela Merkel’s German government found that, of the 1,000 Germans who travelled to join the group, 350 have returned.

Some of those are in German jails, while others await trial, but others were able to get back into Germany and go into hiding.

Of those that have not returned, some have died while others remain in Kurdish prisons in Syria and Iraq.

The report says that the returnees could pose a significant security risk. “In principle, it must be assumed that Islamist attitudes prevail in most cases”, it says.

“Their ability to move inconspicuously in Western countries, from the jihadi groups’ perspective, predestines the returnees to plan and commit attacks in their home countries.”

Many of the attacks to have hit Germany and other Western countries in recent years have been carried out by people pledging allegiance to Islamic State.

Steve Alter, a spokesman for the German government, has said the government faces a big challenge in bringing former ISIS soldiers to justice.

Trying other former fighters in Germany has proved difficult in the past, owing to high standards of evidence, such as photos or social media accounts, demanded in German law.

The German parliament has now passed legislation that strips Germans with dual nationality of their citizenship if they join foreign terrorist militias.

Frank Jensen, who writes about extremism for German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, told Fox News that each prisoner must be thoroughly investigated in Syria or Iraq before they can be brought to trial in Germany.

“We have a huge danger from Islamic terror in Germany, and many people don’t want them to come back.”

“I don’t know whether the government is willing to accept a lengthy de-radicalization program”, he added.

Concerns for German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s health grow once more as she was filmed struggling to keep her composure and visibly shaking during an official ceremony for the second time this month.

The incident happened during the formal appointing of the new justice minister in Berlin’s Bellevue Palace on Thursday morning. The chancellor began shaking while standing next to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was delivering a speech. The shaking stopped and resumed several times.

Merkel was visibly distraught and placed both hands on her chest, trying to control herself. Nevertheless, she continued with the ceremony, and later shook hands, smiled, and posed for photos with other officials.

At one point, the chancellor was offered a glass of water.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has spoken out against anti-Semitism in Germany, and said that police have to guard every synagogue, Jewish school and daycare center in her country.

“We have always had a certain number of anti-Semites among us,” Merkel told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an interview aired on Tuesday. “Unfortunately, there is to this day not a single synagogue, not a single day care center for Jewish children, not a single school for Jewish children that does not need to be guarded by German policemen.”

Merkel stressed a need to learn from her country’s troubled past.

“We have to tell our young people what history has brought us and others and these horrors, why we are for democracy...why we stand up against intolerance.”

Anti-Semitism is certainly on the rise in Germany. 2018 saw a near 20 percent rise in hate crimes against Jews and a near doubling of physical attacks compared to 2017, according to Interior Ministry figures. Meanwhile, the German government’s anti-Semitism commissioner Felix Klein told local media over the weekend that he “can’t recommend Jews to wear kippahs anywhere at any time in Germany,” earning him a rebuke from Israeli President Reuven Rivlin for “capitulation to anti-Semitism.”

Amanpour questioned Merkel on anti-Semitism in the context of the surge in popular support for nationalist parties like the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD). AfD finished in third place behind Merkel’s centrist coalition and the Green party in last weekend’s European Parliament elections.

After several years of missing the threshold to enter Germany’s parliament, AfD finally won 94 seats in the Bundestag in 2017, riding a wave of popular anger at Merkel’s 2015 decision to let more than a million migrants enter Germany. The party has been accused of harboring racists and anti-Semites, but some accuse the new arrivals to Germany of bringing religious hatred of their own.

A series of street interviews with Muslims in Germany shows every single one of them asserting that it’s “absolutely” and “100 per cent” a woman’s fault if she is raped while wearing a short skirt.

Asked by the interviewer, “Are scantily dressed women to blame if they are raped?” every single respondent in the clip says yes.

“Yes, sure. It’s her own fault. It is her fault if she gets raped by strangers,” responds one middle aged man.

“Yes, clearly. Absolutely. 100%,” responds another younger man.

Two other young men agree it’s the woman’s fault if she is raped, before advising her to wear clothing down to her ankles to avoid that fate.

A group of Muslim teenagers also agree it’s the woman’s fault, before one of them says that females should cover everything apart from their face.

The remarks are particularly shocking given what happened in Cologne and other major cities on New Year’s Eve 2015, when 1,200 women were sexually assaulted, with 22 being raped, by Muslim migrant men.

As we previously reported, white girls in Vienna, Austria have begun wearing Islamic headscarves to prevent street harassment by male Muslim migrants.

“Speak with women on the street, speak with children, speak with young girls, I myself know fathers who, when their daughters who are coming home in the evening, when they live in a problem area, give them headscarves so they won’t be recognized as Austrians,” said former MP Marcus Franz.

In a related story, a mother in Germany whose daughter was being bullied by Muslim students because she was blonde, Christian and didn’t wear a headscarf was told by the headmaster of a school in Frankfurt to cover her up with a hijab.

A heavily drunken man, dark-skinned and with a beard, entered St. Paul’s Church in Munich Theresienwiese during the Croatian Mass (Easter blessing), with a bottle of alcohol in hand, lit a firecracker and threw it in the middle of the church and shouted “Allahu akbar.” Everyone panicked and threw the baskets that the Easter meal was in, and ran out screaming. This injured children and adults. The police and its team came and arrested the man. These are shocking pictures that must be shared and not hidden. There were some injured. Many children are in a state of shock.

A school in Frankfurt has come under fire after its headmaster told a young girl she should wear a hijab if she doesn’t want to get bullied.

The student’s mother told the Bildnewspaper that her daughter was “beaten and verbally attacked on the way to school” by a group of Muslim girls.

She explained that her daughter was targeted because “she has blond hair, no headscarf, has a German-Hebrew name – and we are Christians”.

The bullying was so bad it left the fifth grader with a “massive fear of going to school”.

When she took her concerns to the schools headmaster, she was told her daughter should ‘cover up’ if she doesn’t want to get bullied.

“Your daughter does not have to say that she is German”, the headmaster reportedly told her. “Besides, you can give her a headscarf.”

The school in question didn’t respond to Bild’s request for comment, however, the mother confirmed that their situation is a lot better now she has removed her daughter from the school.

There have been other recent cases of religious bullying in other schools across Germany.

The Bild also cited one in Bavaria in which a father said his son and daughter came home one day panicked because another child had told them he would cut off their heads because they are Christians.

In Bonn, another mother said her daughter had shared a similar experience saying, “Our daughter and several classmates of the third grade were put under pressure by a classmate. They were threatened with the words, ‘Your parents will burn in hell if they do not believe in Allah’.”

Religious bullying has been especially prevalent in Berlin where many schools have high populations of migrant-background students.

In 2018, a group of Berlin teachers spoke out about religious bullying saying that German students could be bullied for as little as bringing a ham sandwich for their lunch because pork is forbidden in Islam.

The group advocated the Pro Berlin Neutrality Act which backs up existing legislation to ban religious symbols, such as the headscarf, from classrooms to combat religious bullying.

Austria, meanwhile, has implemented a headscarf ban in kindergartens and has been considering similar bans in elementary schools as well.

Report: German military is purging right-wing populists from its ranks

For a long time now, the German military has always made a conscious attempt rid its ranks of soldiers who harbor neo-Nazi sympathies. However, recent claims made by a number of prominent German news outlets suggest that the military is now targeting soldiers who merely support the national populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) for expulsion too.

Numerous investigations have professed that the Bundeswehr has now started to broaden the range of individuals who it considers “not fit to serve in the armed forces” which have encompassed “sympathizers of Alternative for Germany (AfD) and of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán,” according to Il Giornale.

According to Der Spiegel, a German weekly news magazine, about 64 of the discharged soldiers were members of the anti-mass migration youth movement Generation Identity.

For a long time now, Generation Identity has been under observation by German security services and have been targeted by police raids in the past due to their nationalist politics. In Austria, the organization was accused of creating a ‘mafia’ organization, but were later acquitted of all charges following a trial in 2018. The group has also been banned on Facebook.

The Bundeswehr is said to have also discharged another 64 individuals who were members of the so-called Reichsburger movement, a movement that doesn’t recognize the legitimacy of the present day constitution in Germany, and who is said to idealize the historic 19thcentury German state.

Many have compared the Reichsburger movement to what some commonwealth countries and America refers to as ‘sovereign citizen movements’. The movement has been subject to a number of raids by German security forces. In January of 2017, two suspects from the group were arrested an accused of planning violent attacks against police officials, migrants, and Jews.

Huge growth in the Reichsburger movement was reported last year by the German domestic intelligence agency, the BfV. Intelligence reports suggested that the movement’s numbers had grown from 10,000 in 2016 to more than 16,500 by the end of 2017.

An anonimous source told Der Spiegel that at the very least there were 450 cases of expulsion for ‘far-right extremism’.
