As of this morning, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued a yellow fever outbreak notice for certain areas of Brazil.

Southern Brazil states like Rio Grande do Sul and Sao Paolo have seen nearly 50 cases of yellow fever with approximately 40 percent of those infected perishing to the disease.

Brazil does not require yellow fever vaccination to enter the country, however the CDC highly recommends U.S. travelers to get vaccinated if you are going to an area of Brazil where there is a risk of yellow fever transmission.

Brazil recommends vaccination if you are traveling to the following areas:

All areas of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Distrito Federal (including the capital city of Brasília), Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima, Tocantins, and designated areas of the following states: Bahia, Paraná, Piauí, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo. Vaccination is also recommended for travelers visiting Iguassu Falls.

Vaccination is NOT recommended for travel to the following coastal cities: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Salvador, Recife, and Fortaleza.

In the United States, the vaccine is given only at designated yellow fever vaccination centers.

In addition to vaccination, other prevention measures include avoiding mosquito bites when traveling in tropical areas. Mosquitoes that spread yellow fever usually bite during the day, especially at dusk and dawn.

When outside:
• Wear long-sleeved clothing and long pants. For extra protection, treat clothing with the insecticide permethrin.
• Use insect repellent on exposed skin. Repellents containing DEET (N,N-diethylmetatoluamide), Picaridin (KBR 3023), IR 3535, p-Menthane 3,8-diole (PMD or oil of lemon eucalyptus) are effective. Follow application instructions carefully.

When inside:
• Stay in well-screened areas as much as possible.
• Spray living and sleeping areas with insecticide.

Iranian researchers have announced the death of Royana, Iran's — and the Midle East's — first cloned sheep.

On September 30, 2006, a group of scientists in Iran cloned Royana from an adult cell in a test tube in a laboratory. After the embryo proved its stability, scientists transferred it to the uterus of a female sheep.

After a period of 145 days, Royana was born by caesarean section. Despite critical conditions, he survived and thrived.

"Three years later, Royana is dead. Scientists decided to euthanize him after the abdomenal pain he had been suffering from was traced to his liver," the institute's statement added.

With Royana, Iran has become one of the few countries to possess the technology and the means to clone farm animals, which could lead to advances in medical research, including using cloned animals to produce human antibodies against diseases.

A kid named 'Hanna' and two calves named 'Bonyana' and 'Tamina' were other animals successfully cloned in the country.

In January 2010, Iran became the first Middle Eastern country to produce transgenic animals, such as sheep and goats to have foreign proteins in their milk, which renders them valuable sources of protein for human therapy.

Biotechnology is Iran's second most important scientific research field after nuclear technology.

Efforts by Bush to seek 'anonymity' come at a time his administration is still under fire for a wide array of issues and scandals, including the use of torture against terror suspects, the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003, the warrantless wiretapping of American citizens and, last but not least, economic policies that have pushed the US financial system to the point of no return.

In remarks delivered later at the Friday breakfast meeting, Bush also poked fun at his own intelligence, saying that the fact that he is working on a memoir “is going to come as quite a shock to people up here that I can write a book, much less read one."

周六凌晨在智利發生的八點八級大地震，死亡人數增至超過300人，災民人數多達200萬，估計經濟損失高達150億至300億美元 。首都聖地亞哥和國內其他地區有許多樓宇和建築物倒塌，引致火警，並引發海嘯。當局已經全速展開救援和賑災行動，恐怕死傷人數還會持續上升。暫時無接到當地華人華僑的傷亡報告

智利沿岸城市凌晨發生黎克特制8.8級地震，至少82人死亡，多國發生海嘯警告，遍及四分一個地球。

地震發生在凌晨3時34分(香港時間下午2時34分) ，震央在沿岸的康塞普西翁(Concepcion)東北約 90公里，首都聖地亞哥西南約317公里，深度55公里。目擊者稱，地震歷時約半分鐘。當地表示有約9呎高的海浪。

位於震央以北的首都聖地亞哥，有電線桿和建築物倒下。智利官方表示，至少有82人死亡。地震發生後曾有至少20次5級以上餘震，最大為6.9級。

首都聖地亞哥，有教堂和其他建築物倒塌，居民走到街上躲避。電視新聞的畫面中可見到街上有大量瓦礫。

在聖地亞哥的南部(接近震央)兩個市鎮，損毀較為嚴重，有公路和橋樑完全被毀。

A powerful magnitude-6.1aftershock hit offshore central Chile early Saturday in the wake of a powerful magnitude-8.8 earthquake, leaving 78 people dead.

Following the magnitude-8.8 quake, which shook the capital of Santiago for 90 seconds and triggered tsunami from Chile to Ecuador, more than a dozen aftershocks were also reported in the region — including two measuring magnitude-6.2 and -6.9.

The quake destroyed buildings, houses, telephone lines and power grids in Santiago and knocked out a major bridge connecting the northern and southern sections of the country.

Emergency officials said buildings in the historic quarters of two southern cities had been badly damaged.

According to The US Geological Survey ,the earthquake struck 90 km (56 miles) northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 35 km (22 miles) at 3:34 a.m. local time (0634 GMT).

Earthquake experts say that the quake in Chile was 1,000 times more powerful than the maqnitude-7.0 earthquake that caused extensive damages in Haiti on January 12, killing at least 230,000 people.

A magnitude-8.8 earthquake can yield an amount of energy comparable to that of an explosive with an estimated 10 gigatons (billion tons) of TNT.

Chile is accustomed to earthquakes. The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area as Saturday's quake on May 22, 1960. That quake, which registered a magnitude 9.5, killed 1,655 people and left 2 million homeless. The tsunami that it caused killed people in Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines and caused damage to the West Coast of the United States.

Tax revenues in Germany have suffered a "massive collapse" in January just as more money is being sent into the EU coffers, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

智利發生8.8級地震發出海嘯警報

政府正在調查地震災區的傷亡情況。

智利當地時間27日發生里氏8.8級地震。位於夏威夷的太平洋海嘯預警中心已經向智利和鄰國秘魯發出海嘯預警。根據當地媒體報道，地震已經造成至少47人死亡。

這次地震發生在當地時間27日凌晨3時34分，此次地震震中位於智利中部城市康塞普西翁東北約89公里處的海域，距離智利首都聖地亞哥約300多公里。美國地震監測部門還報告，已發生了里氏6.2級餘震。

這是該國25年來所發生的最強烈地震。

智利首都聖地亞哥建築物搖晃10到30秒，首都部分城區停電。

當地居民形容被地震驚醒，室內牆上和桌子上東西墜落下來。電話線路和供電線路已經被切斷，使評估災情變得非常困難。

智利總統 巴切萊特說，已經收到數人死亡的報道，並表示死亡人數將會上升。她還表示，該國南部的一個群島出現巨浪。

智利民航官員說，首都聖地亞哥機場已經關閉，所有班機都已取消，等待進一步的通知。

巴切萊特總統還呼籲公眾保持鎮靜，如果需要幫助，請與當局聯繫。

她說，一大片巨浪正在襲擊胡安·費爾南德斯群島，島上居民區一半被海水淹沒。

她還表示，如果繼續發生餘震，在沿海地區的居民應該轉移到較高的地點。

美國的太平洋海嘯中心說，最新數據顯示已經出現海嘯，但是現在還不知道這個海嘯的規模有多大。

美國陸續向智利、秘魯、厄瓜多爾、哥倫比亞、中美洲多國以及南極洲地區發出海嘯警報。

日本地震監測部門稱，地震有可能在太平洋地區引發大規模的海嘯，正在密切關注是否會對日本構成影響。

阿根廷境內的安第斯山地區也有震感。

智利官員稱，政府正在評估康塞普西翁以及相鄰地區的破壞情況。

太平洋海嘯中心在地震後發出海嘯預警。智利、秘魯、厄瓜多爾都在預警區域。

康塞普西翁是智利第二大城市，位於距智利首都聖地亞哥南面450公里處。

智利凌晨發生8.8級大地震，首都有建築物損毀，至少47人死亡。

地震發生在凌晨3時34分(香港時間下午2時34分) ，震央在康塞普西翁(Concepcion)東北約 90公里，首都聖地亞哥西南約317公里，深度55公里。目擊者稱，地震歷時約半分鐘。當地表示有約9呎高的海浪。

位於震央以北的首都聖地亞哥，有電線桿和建築物倒下。智利官方表示，至少有47人死亡。地震發生後曾多次餘震，最大為6.9級。

美國 相關機構陸續向智利、秘魯 、厄瓜多爾、哥倫比亞、巴拿馬 、波多黎各等多國以及南極洲地區發出海嘯警報，3個多小時後取消。

A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of Japan causing geological experts to issue a tsunami warning.

The quake measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and struck the Ryukyu Islands in the Pacific Ocean, around 50 miles off Naha in Okinawa.
這次地震為黎克特制7.3級，據美國地質調查局，和打擊在太平洋的琉球群島發生，大約 那霸沖繩50哩外。

Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that coastal regions can expect a large wave of up to two metres in height.

They classed the earthquake as a magnitude 6.9.

The Okinawa Islands, close to the epicentre, have been warned to immediately evacuate from the seashore.
A smaller wave, of up to a half a metre, is expected on the Amami Islands, Tokara Islands, the Daitojima area, Miyakojima and Yayama area.
The agency also warned that as the estimated tsunami time and high tide were very close together, the wave could be higher than predicted.
The quake, at 5.31am local time, was relatively shallow at 6.2 miles deep.

No reports yet of damage or injuries as yet.
Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas.

The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
In October 2004, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck the Niigata region in northern Japan, killing 65 people and injuring more than 3,000.
That was the deadliest quake since a magnitude 7.3 tremor hit the city of Kobe in 1995, killing more than 6,400.

Mr Dimon told investors at the Wall Street bank's annual meeting that "there could be contagion" if a state the size of California, the biggest of the United States, had problems making debt repayments. "Greece itself would not be an issue for this company, nor would any other country," said Mr Dimon. "We don't really foresee the European Union coming apart." The senior banker said that JP Morgan Chase and other US rivals are largely immune from the European debt crisis, as the risks have largely been hedged.

California however poses more of a risk, given the state's $20bn (£13.1bn) budget deficit, which Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is desperately trying to reduce.

Earlier this week, the state's legislature passed bills that will cut the deficit by $2.8bn through budget cuts and other measures. However the former Hollywood film star turned politician is looking for $8.9bn of cuts over the next 16 months, and is also hoping for as much as $7bn of handouts from the federal government.

Earlier this week, John Chiang, the state's controller, said that if a workable plan to reduce the deficit and increase cash levels is not reached soon, he will have to return to issuing IOU's, forcing state workers to take additional unpaid leave and potentially freezing spending.

Last summer, California issued $3bn of IOU's to creditors including residents owed tax refunds as a way of staving off a cash crisis.

"I can't write checks without money; that's against the law. My main goal is to keep the state afloat, but I won't be able to do it without the help of new legislation," said Mr Chiang.
