堪察加半島的生態災難
Scientists have discovered that 95% of the marine inhabitants on the seafloor of Avacha Bay died as a result of large-scale pollution in Kamchatka’s coastal waters. However, its highly likely that due to the disruption of the food chain, the situation will only get worse. “Some large fish, shrimps, and crabs have been preserved, but in very small numbers,” said Ivan Usatov, a researcher at the Kronotsky Nature Reserve and the Pacific Institute of Geography.
Water samples taken from local rivers contained no signs of life and possessed uncharacteristic dark coloring with “brown foam.” The cause of the disaster remains unknown, but soon-to-be-announced lab results will hopefully shine some light on the matter. Meanwhile, the investigative committee has opened a criminal case into the matter.
