A few comms on the (lack of) scientific merits of the "Yan Report". It is non-scientific and false - cherry picking data and ignoring data disproving their hypotheses.
It's using technical language that is impossible to decode for non-experts - poppycock dressed up as 'science'.
- "SARS-CoV-2 was created using ZC45 and/or ZXC21 bat coronaviruses". This simply can't be true - there are more than 3,500 nucleotide differences between SARS-CoV-2 and these viruses.
- The report ignores ALL recent coronavirus data from pangolins and bats. Had this been included, the data would have invalidated all the 'mysterious' homology findings in the report as they relate to matrix protein, Orf8, receptor binding domain, etc.
- "Smoking gun" in the form of restriction sites. These sites are not unique, are all present in genomes ignored by the authors (e.g., RaTG13), and are expected to be present by random chance. None of these would have been used for cloning.
- "Proximal Origin" paper authors are conflicted. Not correct - my lab has never received funding from China and we have no collaborations with Chinese investigators. I have no financial interests in China. All our analyses are scientific and unbiased.

Tonight an odd research institute released a bizarre and unfounded preprint claiming an engineered origin to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Already downloaded 100K times, the paper was picked up by the NY Post. The research institute? Directed by Steve Bannon until his recent conviction.
So this morning I thought it was pretty crazy that a top US pandemic response official and former Putin PR guy, Michael Caputo, was spreading misinformation about leftist hit squads, encouraging people to stockpile ammo, and accusing CDC scientists of sedition.
Hold my beer.

The lead author of the “study” is a self-proclaimed Chinese whistle blower about COVID. Within 12 hours of this “study” being posted on repository it was being covered by conspiracy faux-news sites. Her Wikipedia page was also quickly heavily edited to include this new “study”

From there the story was quickly picked up by the New York Post. By all accounts this study is complete fantasy and conspiracy. It cites other conspiracy work am includes huge unjustified leaps in logic and glaring omissions.

閻麗夢控新冠肺炎是共軍人造 港媒揭其論文與巴農、郭文貴有牽連
逃亡美國的前香港大學公衛學者閻麗夢撰文，想論證新型冠狀病毒是共軍人造而非自然演化，卻被發現這篇未經同儕審查的論文與前白宮策士巴農和中國異議商人郭文貴有關。
香港「南華早報」提到，閻麗夢這篇14日公開的論文上有「法治基金會」（Rule of Law Foundation）的名稱；法治基金會包含兩個設於紐約的慈善機構，兩者曾於2018年11月接受郭文貴1億美元捐款的資助。
按巴農（Steve Bannon）的說法，法治基金會的宗旨是協助遭中國政府壓迫的受害者。巴農曾自稱是基金會內兩個慈善機構之一「法治社會」（Rule of LawSociety）的主席，「法治社會」的名頭也出現在閻麗夢的論文中。
郭文貴2014年逃出中國，巴農則於2017年離開白宮，之後兩人便聯手發布許多影片攻擊中共；不過巴農被控透過私人募資非法吸金，上個月在郭文貴的遊艇上被捕。
閻麗夢與研究團隊一篇存儲於資料平台Zenodo的論文，強調新型冠狀病毒（SARS-CoV-2）應是實驗室產物，是以蝙蝠身上的ZC45和ZXC21冠狀病毒作為樣板或基底改造而來，僅需約6個月就能製成；閻麗夢的論文還要求嚴格檢視一些近期公布、支持病毒源出自然的研究。
不過南華早報指出，閻麗夢的論文另有3名共同作者，看起來是華人姓名，但找不到這3人從事過的研究，論文裡未提到研究員的資歷，也未說明研究員與法治基金會的關係，以及各自在研究中的角色。
南華早報依據論文所附電郵地址去信詢問，也未獲回覆。
閻麗夢在論文中質疑「自然」（Nature）期刊裡一篇聲稱病毒沒有人為基因工程特徵的論文，她說自然期刊的文章恐涉「利益衝突」，但未舉證。
南華早報還提到，閻麗夢已成右翼節目與平台的常客，也經常出現在巴農的節目與郭文貴經營的媒體上。
被點名的自然期刊論文共同作者之一安德森（Kristian Andersen）16日表示，閻麗夢論文裡許多核心主張「事實上都不精確」，新型冠狀病毒與閻麗夢提及的蝙蝠病毒也並沒有「啟人疑竇地相似」。
安德森說：「（閻麗夢論文內容）根本不是事實，新型冠狀病毒與這些（閻麗夢所指的蝙蝠）病毒，彼此有超過3500處核甘酸差異。」
安德森也駁斥閻麗夢的「利益衝突」指控，強調「我的實驗室從沒拿過中國資助，也沒跟中方調查人員合作，我本人在中國也沒有金錢利益，我們的研究分析全都基於科學且不帶偏見」。
