Asteroid 433 Eros (1898 DQ) is scheduled to make a close pass to Earth on January 31st, 2012. The banana-shaped, stony asteroid will come to within 16,546,000 miles of Earth at approximately 11 AM UTC time.

On January 17th the asteroid is 17,754,000 miles away with just over a million miles to travel before it gets closest to Earth. This may not seem important to the average listener, but for astronomers who like to know what’s going on in the space outside our atmosphere, 433 Eros gives us something to pay attention to now and in the future.

The asteroid is classified as an NEA (near-Earth asteroid) and a Mars-crosser. It was discovered in 1898 and was the first asteroid to be orbited by an unmanned space vehicle sent from Earth in the year 2000. Prior to taking up orbit around 433 Eros, the United States used another NEAR-Shoemaker space vehicle for a flyby of the orbiting asteroid.

Those missions resulted in an understanding of the physical properties of Eros. A BBC science and technology report published in 1999 tells the public of what NASA learned about the asteroid.

The Mars-crosser asteroid known as 433 Eros contains more precious metal that has ever been excavated from the surface of the earth. Not just gold, but aluminum, titanium, and platinum to name but a few.

Stony asteroids contain an average of 3% precious metals. 433 Eros is massive. It is 696 mi.³ of rocky material which equates to 21 mi.³ of precious material. It’s not just one Fort Knox it’s 2000 of them.

The raw material contained within 433 Eros is not only important monetarily on Earth, but its value is increased by the availability of those natural resources for future space construction on properties other than Earth.

The aluminum and titanium available within the matrix of the stony material can be excavated and processed into usable construction material to support and sustain outposts for manned space missions in the future.

NASA has not released new information on planned missions to 433 EROS but many astronomers await the announcement. Consider the fact that when they found out it was full of precious metal, the price for gold was $250 an ounce and was worth nine million a ton, today it has gone way up.

Today the asteroid is worth over 50 million a ton making 433 Eros worth over 11,000,000,000,000 at today’s current prices.

With that much money floating around in space this astronomer cannot understand why NASA doesn’t have a plan to break into the bank. Maybe with the current Mars science laboratory mission slated to land on the Martian surface in August of 2012, NASA is getting ready to take advantage of 433 Eros and its close approach to Mars in December of 2012?

There is no hard proof that NASA plans to exploit this asteroid but until they do astronomers will wonder out loud why the United States hasn’t formulated a plan to make bank from this important discovery.
