Several US-funded organizations have made calls to demand Correa's resignation. The police forces behind the coup are maintaining President Rafael Correa sequestered in a military hospital. Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez warned minutes ago that Correa's life is in "severe danger". Chávez also criticized the US State Department's failure to condemn the coup underway in Ecuador this afternoon during their daily press briefing. State spokesman Phillip Crowley said the US is "monitoring the situation" in Ecuador, but failed to condemn the developments.

There is mass police repression in Quito against pro-Correa forces in the street. Telesur news team was detained by coup forces and prevented from broadcasting earlier this afternoon.

President Chávez left this afternoon for an emergency UNASUR meeting in Argentina. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Bolivian President Evo Morales and Peruvian President Alan Garcia have confirmed their presence.

============ A coup attempt is underway against the government of President Rafael Correa. On Thursday morning, groups of police forces rebelled and took over key strategic sites in Quito, Ecuador’s capital. President Correa immediately went to the military base occupied by the police leading the protest to work out a solution to the situation. The police protesting claimed a new law passed on Wednesday regarding public officials would reduce their benefits.

Nonetheless, President Correa affirmed that his government has actually doubled police wages over the past four years. The law would not cut benefits but rather restructure them. The law was used as an excuse to justify the police protest. But other forces are behind the chaos, attempting to provoke a coup led by former president Lucio Guitierrez, who was impeached by popular revolt in Ecuador in 2005. “This is a coup attempt led by Lucio Guitierrez”, denounced Correa on Thursday afternoon via telephone. Correa was attacked by the police forces with tear gas. "Kill me if you need to. There will be other Correa's", said the President, addressing the police rebellion. He was hospitalized shortly after at a military hospital, which has now been taking over by coup forces.

As of 1pm Thursday, police forces were attempting to access his hospital room to possibly assassinate him.

Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño called on supporters to go to the hospital to defend Correa and prevent his assassination. Military forces took over an air base in Quito to prevent air transit and took over nearby streets to prevent Correa's supporters from mobilizing towards the hospital. Other security forces took over the parliament, preventing legislators from accessing the state institution and causing severe chaos and violence. Thousands of supporters filled Quito’s streets, gathering around the presidential palace, backing Correa and rejecting the coup attempt. At 2pm EST, the Ecuadorian government declared an emergency state. Countries throughout the region expressed support for Correa and condemned the destabilization.

The Organization of American States in Washington called an emergency meeting at 2:30pm EST. ALBA nations and UNASUR are also convening.

Ecuador is a member of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Americas (ALBA) and a close ally of Venezuela. Last June, Honduras, a prior ALBA member, was victim of a coup d'etat that forced President Manuel Zelaya from power. The coup was backed by Washington. In 2002, Venezuela was also subject to a Washington-backed coup d'etat that briefly ousted President Chavez from power. He was returned to office within 48 hours after millions of Venezuelans protested and defeated the US-backed coup leaders.

Ecuador is the newest victim of destabilization in South America. USAID channels millions annually into political groups against Correa that could be behind the coup attempt.

【本報訊】被喻為「超級工業病毒」的電腦蠕蟲Stuxnet，在全球不斷播毒，最近更在內地「大爆發」，至今已感染六百萬內地個人用戶及近千企業用戶。此病毒針對Windows及西門子的自動控制系統進行侵襲，故多家西門子的香港客戶如港鐵、機場管理局等，均面對電腦蠕蟲的威脅。香港電腦保安事故協調中心暫未接獲Stuxnet侵襲本港企業的報告。
港鐵機管局均用西門子系統
Stuxnet今年六月被發現，網絡保安專家指該蠕蟲針對Windows及西門子SIMATIC WinCC系統共七個漏洞進行攻擊。最近Stuxnet利用西門子自動控制系統的默認密碼安全繞過漏洞，讀取數據庫中儲存的數據，並發送給註冊地位於美國的伺服器。

病毒成功入侵後會抹去部分電子痕迹，網絡管理員難以即時察覺，導致敏感的商業資料外洩，甚至影響整個企業運作。Stuxnet起初透過USB手指散播病毒，令伊朗成為「重災區」，其後各地大型基建及工業設施的電腦系統相繼遭受破壞。內地近日亦爆發「電腦疫症」，令數百萬用戶受感染。

西門子表示，暫未接獲香港客戶報告受Stuxnet感染。該公司今年七月已在網上提供防毒程式，讓客戶偵察及清除病毒。港鐵發言人表示，未有受到Stuxnet影響。西門子的本港客戶尚有中電、迪士尼樂園及機管局等。

【明報專訊】一種針對大型基建電腦系統的超級電腦病毒Stuxnet近日肆虐全球，中國官方媒體新華社亦證實內地600萬台電腦受感染。港府資訊科技總監辦公室已向各決策局及部門發出警報，促請他們留意病毒威脅。電腦專家表示，Stuxnet的傳播性低，但一旦基建受襲，會帶來嚴重破壞，不能掉以輕心，呼籲有關機構盡快與電腦系統生產商聯絡，做好防範措施。

專攻西門子系統基建高危

資訊科技總監辦公室發言人表示，一直與香港電腦保安事故協調中心和警方密切留意Stuxnet的散播情况，以及在本港及海外造成的影響。如有需要，會加強監察、協調及通報措施。辦公室已發出警報，促請各部門留意Stuxnet的威脅，有需要情况下安裝修補程式，堵塞軟件保安漏洞。

新華社證實，Stuxnet於內地已侵襲600萬台個人電腦和重要企業電腦系統。Stuxnet針對西門子（Siemens）生產的監控和數據收集系統（SCADA），該系統主要用於發電、供水等基建和大型工業設施；伊朗原定11月投產的第一個核發電設施，亦因Stuxnet侵襲而被迫押後兩月。

西門子證實本港多間機構均有採用其產品，但暫未能確認政府部門是否有使用SCADA，公司已提供工具堵塞漏洞，目前西門子全球共受收到15宗報告，本港未有感染個案。

USB手指傳播港未有電腦中招

電腦保安事故協調中心經理古煒德表示，Stuxnet可入侵並控制基建電腦系統，一旦系統受破壞，市民日常生活會大受影響，不能掉以輕心。他補充，Stuxnet主要透過USB手指傳播，目前中心亦無收到本地感染個案。

編碼極複雜疑國家設計攻伊朗

Stuxnet編碼異常複雜，有英國安全專家指它幾可肯定屬國家設計的病毒，由於攻擊目標明顯是伊朗的核設施，美國及以色列嫌疑最大。有電腦專家在Stuxnet的編碼中發現一個名為「Myrtus」（香桃木）的檔案，香桃木一詞出自《聖經》，源自猶太人先發制人，破壞了波斯軍隊的陰謀，有分析認為那代表以色列意圖藉散播Stuxnet，破壞伊朗核計劃，但亦有指有人插贓以色列。

鑑於Stuxnet已在內地爆發，立法會資訊科技界議員譚偉豪擔心它很快會攻擊香港，促請港府留意相關基建、發電與機場等重要設施。他認為政府的電腦防衛意識較強，但提醒當局要特別留意由其他公私營機構監控的設施，同時要及早制定應變方案。

歐盟從去年開始對英國展開調查，認為英國沒有就非法攔截互聯網信息的行為制定足夠的法律。

根據歐盟法律，英國應當設立一個獨立的全國監管機構，監督網上攔截信息傳遞的行為。

如果法官在裁決中接受歐盟委員會提出的指控，英國可能受到罰款的處罰。

此前曾有英國公民投訴說，有人收集了他們的生活行為信息，以便把這些信息用來制定商家的商業對策。

根據歐盟法律規定，網上攔截任何電子郵件信息和用戶瀏覽互聯網記錄，都需要得到用戶本人同意。但是根據英國的規定，如果截取信息者「有理由認為」自己已經獲得同意，就可以截取信息。

The author draws upon his military experience with the UFO phenomenon dating back to WW2, and later, with NORAD and his subsequent life-long association with a senior NORAD intelligence officer who provided him a wealth of historical data relating to NORAD’s experience with the UFO/alien reality which has never been revealed to the public. In the military's view, as conveyed to and understood by Fulham, the public is not yet ready to accept an alien reality.

Fulham writes it is generally recognized UFOs function beyond our earth's physical laws, and has concluded answers to questions regarding who they are, where are they from, why are they here, are they a threat, and the mystery of abductions could only be found at a higher dimension of reality.

In the mainstream media, all the talk is about how the "recession" is over. But the truth is that our economic problems are far from over. In fact, the U.S. banking system is dying. U.S. banks continue to fail at a record pace. The FDIC list of problem banks continues to grow at an alarming pace. Loans and mortgages continue to go bad at an accelerating rate at banks across the United States. The truth is that we are in deep, deep trouble, and the vast majority of the American people do not even realize it. But the American people better wake up soon, because if the U.S. banking system dies, the American Dream is going to die along with it for tens of millions of Americans.

So far in 2010, 127 U.S. banks have been shut down by federal regulators. That puts us on pace to far surpass the total of 140 U.S. banks that failed last year. And last year was the most bank failures that the U.S. had seen since back in 1992.

Unfortunately, it looks like the number of bank failures is only going to continue to get worse.

The number of "problem banks" is increasing at a truly frightening pace.

As of the end of 2008, there were 252 banks on the FDIC problem list.

As of the end of 2009, there were 702 banks on the FDIC problem list.

As we approach the end of September 2010, there are now 872 banks (well over 10 percent of all U.S. banks) on the FDIC problem list.

Does anyone else spot a trend?

So does the FDIC have plenty of assets with which to handle all of these bank failures?

No.

Today, the FDIC is backing approximately 8,000 U.S. banks that have a total of about $13 trillion in assets with a deposit insurance fund that is basically empty.

Well, to be honest, the situation is much more dire than that.

It is actually being reported that the FDIC's deposit insurance fund is sitting at about negative 20.7 billion dollars.

Negative 20.7 billion dollars?

That's not good.

And things are going to get even worse.

The FDIC now estimates that the deposit insurance fund will experience a $60 billion reduction due to additional bank closings between now and 2014.

Needless to say, that is not good news.

The U.S. banking system is basically a huge disaster area right about now.

And that suits the biggest U.S. banks just fine.

You see, the truth is that when small banks fail, the big dogs pick up market share.

In an article on our sister website entitled "Are We About To Witness The Greatest Banking Consolidation In U.S. History?", I discussed the rapidly growing market share of the banks at the top of the food chain....

Back in 2000, the "Big Four" U.S. banks - Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo - held approximately 22 percent of all deposits in FDIC-insured institutions. As of June 30th of last year that figure was up to 39 percent.

That is quite an impressive decade of work for the big boys.

And as more "small enough to fail" banks continue to go under, the big banks will be sitting there ready to gobble up the leftovers.

Isn't our system great?

Meanwhile, there are plenty of signs that part two of the double-dip housing crash has begun.

Meanwhile, health insurance companies have announced that they plan to raise premiums because of the new health care law.

Meanwhile, bankruptcy filings in the United States increased 20 percent during the twelve month period ending June 30th.

Meanwhile, millions of jobs are being outsourced and offshored and they are never coming back.

Is it any wonder that according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll, 74 percent of Americans still believe that the U.S. economy is in a recession?

The truth is that the U.S. economy is a complete and total disaster area and we are in deep, deep trouble.

These rumors, whether or not true, may have a negative effect on Spain’s credit rating, which was downgraded by Moody’s today. On the other hand, the trick — if real — may have fooled the market long enough for a recovery to begin.

An Earth-size planet has been spotted orbiting a nearby star at a distance that would makes it not too hot and not too cold — comfortable enough for life to exist, researchers announced today (Sept. 29).

If confirmed, the exoplanet, named Gliese 581g, would be the first Earth-like world found residing in a star's habitable zone — a region where a planet's temperature could sustain liquid water on its surface. [Illustration of planet Gliese 581g.]

And the planet's discoverers are optimistic about the prospects for finding life there.

"Personally, given the ubiquity and propensity of life to flourish wherever it can, I would say, my own personal feeling is that the chances of life on this planet are 100 percent," said Steven Vogt, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, during a press briefing today. "I have almost no doubt about it."

His colleague, Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, in Washington, D.C., wasn't willing to put a number on the odds of life, though he admitted he's optimistic.

"It's both an incremental and monumental discovery," Sara Seager, an astrophysicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told SPACE.com. Incremental because the method used to find Gliese 581g already has found several planets most of the known planets, both super-Earths, more massive than our own world outside their stars' habitable zone, along with non-Earth-like planets within the habitable zone.

"It really is monumental if you accept this as the first Earth-like planet ever found in the star's habitable zone," said Seager, who was not directly involved in the discovery.

Vogt, Butler and their colleagues will detail the planet finding in the Astrophysical Journal.

The newfound planet joins more than 400 other alien worlds known to date. Most are huge gas giants, though several are just a few times the mass of Earth.

Stellar tugs

Gliese 581g is one of two new worlds the team discovered orbiting the red dwarf star Gliese 581, bumping that nearby star's family of planets to six. The other newfound planet, Gliese 581f, is outside the habitable zone, researchers said.

The star is located 20 light-years from Earth in the constellation Libra. One light-year is about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion km).

Red dwarf stars are about 50 times dimmer than our sun. Since these stars are so much cooler, their planets can orbit much closer to them and still remain in the habitable zone.

Estimates suggest Gliese 581g is 0.15 astronomical units from its star, close enough to its star to be able to complete an orbit in just under 37 days. One astronomical unit is the average distance between the Earth and sun, which is approximately 93 million miles (150 million km).

The Gliese 581 planet system now vaguely resembles our own, with six worlds orbiting their star in nearly circular paths.

With support from the National Science Foundation and NASA, the scientists — members of the Lick-Carnegie Exoplanet Survey — collected 11 years of radial velocity data on the star. This method looks at a star's tiny movements due to the gravitational tug from orbiting bodies.

The subtle tugs let researchers estimate the planet's mass and orbital period, how long it takes to circle its star.

Gliese 581g has a mass three to four times Earth's, the researchers estimated. From the mass and estimated size, they said the world is probably a rocky planet with enough gravity to hold onto an atmosphere.

The planet is tidally locked to its star, so that one side basks in perpetual daylight, while the other side remains in darkness. This locked configuration helps to stabilize the planet's surface climate, Vogt said.

"Any emerging life forms would have a wide range of stable climates to choose from and to evolve around, depending on their longitude," Vogt said, suggesting that life forms that like it hot would just scoot toward the light side of that line while forms with polar-bear-like preferences would move toward the dark side.

Between blazing heat on the star-facing side and freezing cold on the dark side, the average surface temperature may range from 24 degrees below zero to 10 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 31 to minus 12 degrees Celsius), the researchers said.

Are you sure?

Supposedly habitable worlds have been found and later discredited, so what makes this one such a breakthrough?

There's still a chance that further observations will dismiss this planet, also. But over the years, the radial velocity method has become more precise, the researchers point out in their journal article.

In addition, the researchers didn't make some of the unrealistic assumptions made in the past, Seager said.

For instance, another planet orbiting Gliese 581 (the planet Gliese 581c) also had been considered to have temperatures suitable for life, but in making those calculations, the researchers had come up with an "unrealistic" estimate for the amount of energy the planet reflected, Seager pointed out. That type of estimate wasn't made for this discovery.

"We're looking at this one as basically the tip of the iceberg, and we're expecting more to be found," Seager said.

One way to make this a reality, according to study researchers, would be "to build dedicated 6- to 8-meter-class Automated Planet Finder telescopes, one in each hemisphere," they wrote.

The telescopes — or "light buckets" as Seager referred to them — would be dedicated to spying on the nearby stars thought to potentially host Earth-like planets in their habitable zones. The result would be inexpensive and probably would reveal many other nearby potentially habitable planets, the researchers wrote.

Beyond the roughly 100 nearest stars to Earth, there are billions upon billions of stars in the Milky Way, and with that in mind, the researchers suggest tens of billions of potentially habitable planets may exist, waiting to be found.

Planets like Gliese 581g that are tidally locked and orbit the habitable zone of red dwarfs have a high probability of harboring life, the researchers suggest.

Earth once supported harsh conditions, the researchers point out. And since red dwarfs are relatively "immortal" living hundreds of billions of years (many times the current age of the universe), combined with the fact that conditions stay so stable on a tidally locked planet, there's a good chance that if life were to get a toe-hold it would be able to adapt to those conditions and possibly take off, Butler said.
