The Welsh government expects high-ranking officials at the University of Wales to resign after a “cash for qualifications” scandal was revealed by the state-run BBC.
威爾斯政府預期威爾斯大學的高級職員辭職,在一宗"現金換取資格”的醜聞後,由國營的英國廣播公司揭露。
The BBC Wales broadcasted a programme called 'Week In Week Out' on Wednesday, showing an undercover reporter posing as a student and paying £1,500 in cash for bogus qualifications at the colleges affiliated to the University of Wales.
BBC威爾斯在星期三廣播一個稱為'週來週去'的節目,顯示一名臥底記者假扮學生,並在威爾斯大學附屬學院以現金1,500英鎊支付膺貨資格。
Vice-chancellors of five Welsh universities including Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff, Glamorgan, and Swansea have urged the University of Wales to be scrapped.
五所威爾斯大學包括阿伯里斯特威斯、班戈、卡廸夫、格拉和斯旺西的大學副校長,已作出呼籲廢棄威爾斯大學。
Welsh Conservative Shadow Education Minister and South Pembrokeshire Assembly Member (AM) Angela Burns called for the university ex vice-chancellor Professor Marc Clement, now president, to admit “complete responsibility for what happened on his watch.”

“I have written to the minister expressing my deep concerns over The University of Wales and the scandal's over overseas validation and now the degrees for sale,” Burns said. “I would like the ex Vice-Chancellor to explain what went wrong and to consider if it is appropriate he stays on as President of the University.”

In addition, Cardiff South and Penarth Labour AM Vaughan Gething has expressed concerns over the issue saying, “the time has come for the chair of the Council of the University of Wales, Hugh Thomas, to consider his position as a matter of urgency.”

Moreover, Plaid party AM Lord Elis-Thomas, who is also the president of Bangor University, has written to the Education Minister, urging the abolition of the University of Wales title as soon as possible.

An earlier probe into the university's links with overseas colleges triggered the recent investigation, which revealed the illegal market for getting degrees before the deadline by post-graduates.

According to a source close to Education Minister Leighton Andrews, “The Minister is incandescent about the continuing serious situation with the University of Wales and the complete failure of governance at the very top of the institution.”

However, the university of Wales spokesman stated, “The University does not, nor has it ever, validated colleges, institutions or universities - the university only validates specifics [sic] programmes of study which lead to a University of Wales award. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of validation.”
