Every so often we hear one of these end-of-the-world stories. There's a meteor that's going to hit the earth, or the sun's going to lose its gravitational pull. And generally we can ignore them because they're the calculator speculations of some shed-scientist crackpot.
Today we heard another: The earth is going to be hit by a barrage of solar flares in 2013 when the sun's magnetic energy cycle coincides with its 11-year peak in super-powered-sunspot activity -- but this time it wasn't a maverick amateur making the predictions. It was freakin' NASA.
We think the word you're looking for is "yikes."
The once-in-a-generation occurrence has gone broadly unnoticed in the past but has the potential to destroy all the computer systems on which our modern world relies: Bank accounts, medical records, business records, entire websites and, yes, your Facebook account could all disappear.
The solar flares generate massive shifts in magnetic activity, which could potentially lead to blackouts, communications failing, TV and radio networks disappearing and, worst of all, the Internet and all its awesome websites (like Asylum) vanishing.
Dr. Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division said, "We know it's coming but we don't know how bad it's going to be.
"Systems will just not work. The flares rapidly change the magnetic field on the earth, like a lightning bolt. That is the solar effect."
Professor Richard Harrison of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire told the U.K.'s Metro, "The sun is now waking up. It's been very inactive, but there's a lot of debate about how dramatic its waking up will be. It's not scaremongering."
We're sure it's not, Richard. Frankly, we're going to start stockpiling now.

不是2012！美國宇航局：太陽將在2013年發生強烈磁暴(圖片：美國宇航局官網)科學網訊 北京時間6月17日消息，近年來不斷有世界末日之說，盡管其真實性還有待証實，但日前美國宇航局(NASA)卻非常罕見提出警告，地球可能遭遇強烈的太陽磁暴，而且時間點就在3年后，也就是2013年，到時候全球將陷入大停電，網絡電子通訊將全部無法使用。如果這一切成真的話，意味著人類生活將發生歷史性倒退。
好萊塢電影《2012》以及《神秘代碼》均模擬世界末日天災襲擊地球的恐怖景象，古老馬雅歷法也曾有類似預言，不過，未來兩、3年內真的會有災難降臨嗎？美國美國宇航局資深科學家警告，太陽活動將在2013年左右，由沉睡的靜止期蘇醒，屆時將發生大規模日冕噴發現象，巨大的閃焰威力將相當於100枚氫彈爆炸，瞬間撞擊地球磁層。
美國美國宇航局的科學家、政府決策者和研究員上周齊集首都華盛頓全國記者俱樂部，參與太空天氣方面的高峰論壇。相關專家在會上討論到，太陽可能將在2013年左右從沉睡中蘇睡，隨即進入活躍期，之后引發的太陽風暴將對地球生成嚴重影響。
專家表示，恐怖的太陽風暴影響超乎想像，在活躍高峰期間，黑子生成劇烈爆發活動，觸發太陽風暴。黑子爆發時會釋放大量帶電粒子，可能讓全地球陷入一片黑暗，不但電力無法供給，臭氧層被破壞，電子通訊還可能全部停擺，比如醫院、銀行還有機場根本無法運作，更別說個人用的手機、電腦和衛星定位系統。
而如果這一切真的發生，那麼給人類帶來的經濟損失，預計將是卡特裡娜颶風的20倍(2005年卡特裡娜颶風重創新奧爾良，造成1250億美元損失)。相關天文專家指出，太陽黑子活動以每11年為一個周期，地球曾在1859年，也就是151年前經歷強大的太陽風暴襲擊。不過，當時電力通訊不發達，因此未造成重大災情。
而由於擔心太陽風暴對地球帶來嚴重影響，科學家開始密切監測太陽，同時打算在太陽風暴較頻繁的期間，及早將人造衛星切換到安全模式，以便能減少損害。實際上，科學家早在幾十年前就不斷追求提升太空氣象預報技術的准確性，希望能避開太陽風暴的威脅。
美國宇航局的太陽動態觀測衛星(Solar Dynamics Observatory，SDO)今年2月11日從佛羅裡達卡那維爾角的空軍基地發射升空，進入距離地表約3萬6000公裡的“地球同步軌道(geosynchronous orbit)”，以便能24小時監測太陽這顆無時無刻都在變動的恆星，以期更了解太陽內部的結構與磁場活動。
