Video shows man in Canada grab 92-year-old, throw him out of store, causing him to fall and hit his head, cops said.
Police in Canada are investigating a vicious attack on a 92-year-old Asian man as a hate crime after the assailant was caught on tape throwing the victim to the ground while shouting racial slurs that included comments about coronavirus.
The despicable assault took place in a convenience store in Vancouver last month, but police finally identified the suspect on Thursday after sharing the shocking surveillance footage on social media earlier this week.
The video shows the white attacker grabbing the elderly man by the arm, pushing him out of the store and shoving him to the ground. The victim, who police said suffers from severe dementia, hit his head on the pavement but was not seriously injured.
During the assault, the violent customer also yelled racist remarks that were connected to the coronavirus pandemic.
“I can’t get into specifics, but they were racially motivated slurs and comments,” Vancouver Police Constable Tania Visintin told reporters at a news conference this week. “They had to do with COVID-19 and they were anti-Asian comments.”
The March 13 assault happened in front of several witnesses, none of whom appeared to try to stop the attacker, as well as at least one child.
The victim is at home with his family and is OK, Visintin said.
The suspect was being questioned Thursday, but authorities have not released his name or possible charges. Vancouver Police said they received numerous tips after posting the video on social media on Wednesday.
“Police would like to thank the community and partners for their overwhelming support on such a serious, intolerable incident,” they said in a statement.
