前幾天，PTT 的 marvel 板上，有網友翻譯了一篇 reddit 的 Nosleep 板去年 11 月的文章，譯文標題為「一群變態鎖定觀看 YouTube 的孩童」。內容大意是一位美國加州的動畫師到一家神祕的、時薪優渥的公司，製作蜘蛛人、艾莎、海綿寶寶、彩虹小馬等卡通人物的動畫模型，後來碰到一些令人不安的事件而決定離職，之後才發現他的動畫模型被製作成內容詭異的、針對兒童觀眾的、在 YouTube 上面廣泛流傳的影片。

儘管文章內容的真實性有待查證，這篇文章在八卦板上引起廣大的迴響，甚至驚動了 PTT 的創辦人 杜奕瑾（Ethan Tu）。譯文發布的隔天，杜奕瑾在臉書上轉貼了這篇譯文，警告家長要注意 YouTube Kids 的內容，並轉貼了另一篇恐懼鳥（一位擅長寫恐怖奇聞題材的作家）的文章，暗示這些怪異影片可能和俄國有關，可能是犯罪組織試圖大規模荼毒、洗腦兒童心靈的產物。
從過去就出現的「ElsaGate」邪典影片
不過，YouTube 上面各種內容怪異的卡通角色、兒童玩具的影片，嚴格來說並不是新出現的現象。早在 2014 年 8 月，就有紀錄顯示 DisneyCarToys（已改名為 DCToys Sandaroo Kids）這個頻道上傳了「冰雪奇緣的艾莎和蜘蛛人約會！」這部影片，內容是蜘蛛人嫉妒地看著艾莎親吻一個娃娃。到了 2017 年，這部影片已累積高達 3600 萬點閱數和 7800 條留言。
2015 年 2 月，Google 正式發布 YouTube Kids。這個應用程式強調會從 YouTube 上面挑選「適合闔家觀賞（family-friendly）」的內容給孩童瀏覽。雖然沒有明確證據，但許多網友懷疑 Elsagate 是在 YouTube Kids 發布之後才開始逐漸盛行。
2015 年 12 月開始，就有外國網友注意到這些影片慢慢在 YouTube 上流行起來，並到 reddit 的 answers 板發問「那些奇怪的超級英雄影片是怎麼回事？」

到了 2017 年 6 月，由於這個現象的廣泛程度，reddit 網友為此建立了 ElsaGate 子板，專門討論與這個現象相關的話題。此後，這種影片類別即被網友泛稱為「ElsaGate」。依據 ElsaGate 板的定義：
「（廣義的）Elsagate 泛指一種 YouTube 常見的現象。在可被孩童收看、或是特別針對孩童的頻道中，反覆出現的、內容不適當的題材和動畫。這些影片常常涉及蜘蛛人、艾莎、小丑、米老鼠，以及其他知名的兒童卡通人物。」

ElsaGate 影片不適當的內容包括：
◎ 引發驚嚇 /焦慮：昆蟲（蜘蛛等）、針頭注射、嚴重傷口、死亡
◎ 令人暈眩：搖晃的鏡頭、怪異的拍攝角度、大小異常的娃娃或人類
◎ 身體變形：角色腹部被撐大、四肢被拉伸、四肢被截斷
◎ 性暗示：親吻、部分或全部裸體、模擬性行為的動作
◎ 怪癖：食糞、飲尿、靠近臉部放屁、綁縛、奴役、懷孕、碰觸睪丸
◎ 不當行為：偷竊、攻擊、性侵、謀殺、食人、抽菸、酗酒、玩弄糞尿

要注意的是，ElsaGate 影片之間的美術風格、劇情、詭異程度，有時候會有很大的差異（2D 動畫、3D 動畫、黏土動畫、真人 …）。但是同一風格的作品會被多個頻道反覆複製、再製。有些影片只是呈現了令人尷尬的差勁演技和無趣劇情，有些影片則涉及了嚴重的暴力、噁心或性暗示的情節。

除了明顯的怪異、不適當內容以外，ElsaGate 影片還有一些詭異特徵：
◎ 影片標題和影片前半段內容，通常看似無害、適合孩童觀看。
◎ 點閱次數極高，即使是新上傳的影片也可能擁有異常高的點閱次數。
◎ 上傳 ElsaGate 的頻道極多，新頻道不斷出現。
◎ 不同頻道之間，常出現內容極相似、甚至一樣的影片內容。
◎ 影片下方留言，常常是無法理解的字句或亂碼。
◎ 動畫的重複性，似乎暗示動畫出自於同一來源 /製作團體。
除了上面典型的 ElsaGate 影片以外，注意 YouTube 上面也有出現下列兩種涉及兒童、兒童題材，且內容具有爭議性的影片類別：
第一種是劇情涉及對真人孩童不當對待的影片，例如 Toy Freaks 的主持人 Greg Chism，影片當中他常常對他的兩名女兒進行引發驚嚇、憤怒、害怕、反抗的行為，並要求兩名女兒演出互相嘔吐、嫌惡、模擬傷害的情節。Toy Freaks 已於去年 11 月遭官方關閉。（相關新聞：https://goo.gl/cuYRKn）
又例如，Investigating YouTube 指出另一頻道 Toy Baby 似乎嘗試模仿 Toy Freaks 的風格，同樣以做出各種令小孩不舒服的舉動為影片主題。（https://goo.gl/A92qm7）
第二種是玩具影片，這種影片可能不涉及真人演員或動畫演出，但主持人會對特定兒童玩具做出令人不舒服的舉動。

被稱為「ElsaGate」的由來

為何有這種影片的出現？
ElsaGate 影片為什麼會出現，目前網路上眾說紛紜。常見的猜測包括：
◎ 作者試圖透過影片進行兒童性誘拐（child grooming，透過友善的外觀消除兒童戒心，而於取得信任後誘使其發生性行為的行為）。
◎ 作者試圖將不適當的言行正常化。
◎ 作者把這種類型的影片當成一種網路梗（meme）。
◎ 作者試圖滿足喜歡看這種影片的成人觀眾潛在市場。然而，由於 ElsaGate 影片常常具有極高的點閱次數，讓人懷疑這個潛在市場是否擁有等同數量的觀眾。許多人懷疑它們的點閱次數是透過直接購買、或是透過 Multiple-Channel Network（MCN）增加曝光率。例如，Maker Studios，迪士尼的子公司，就包含了一些 ElsaGate 頻道在內。
◎ 這是特別針對 YouTube Kids 演算法的缺陷而開發的作品，期望被它被主動推薦給幼年觀眾。幼年觀眾傾向把影片完整看完，較容易被廣告所觸及。此外，幼年觀眾由於好奇心、加上涉世未深，可能更容易受到性、暴力、噁心題材的吸引。
