A new generation of the homeless has emerged in Greece, as the country grapples with growing unemployment and the deepening economic crisis.

According to Klimaka, a Greek non-governmental organization, the number of homeless people has soared by 25 percent since 2009, with people from all social classes ending up without a roof over their heads.

The European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have presented Greece with two rescue packages in return for specific austerity measures, which include the cutting of public sector salaries and pensions, increasing taxes and overhauling the pension system. The suggestion of these measures has sparked nationwide protests in Greece.
Athens must persuade both the EU and the IMF that it is making sufficient financial reforms, otherwise, it will not receive the next USD 11 billion portion of its bail-out loans; it is estimated the government will be bankrupt within weeks.
Greece's public debt equals some 162 percent of its gross domestic product; if it fails to obtain international support, the country will run out of money and default on its debts within weeks.
