Germany’s centre right coalition is under new pressure after Bilderberg Defence Minister Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg threatened to resign.

According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper on Sunday, Guttenberg repeatedly ‘told friends’ that he is considering resigning. However, Bild newspaper reported the unpopular Defence Minister has decided to stay on, allegedly for the sake of “the soldiers serving in Afghanistan.”

Guttenberg has faced fierce opposition to his proposal to abolish conscription, paving the way for German soldiers to serve abroad for the first time since the end of the second world war.

Conscripts are not allowed to serve abroad, according to the Constitution.

German President and Bilderberg Horst Köhler resigned last month following criticism for his suggestion that Germany’s military role and its participation in the Afghan conflict could be justified if it served the interests of corporations, reducing the role of soldiers to hired corporate mercenaries.

Guttenberg last week also argued that furthering economic interests was a legitimate reason for war . But then again, so did the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, who was largely financed by industrialists and bankers, and who justified the second world war of aggression on the grounds that „Germany“ needed „Lebensraum“ and other „resources.“

CDU chief of Hessen Volker Bouffier said that Guttenberg’s push threatened the foundation of the CDU.

„You can’t call into question a principle that we have kept for decades in one afternoon,“ he said.

CDU party chief Volker Kauder also said that he wanted conscription to be retained because it keeps the linsk between society and the army.

In spite of the fact the overwhelming opposition from his own party, in spite of the fact that conscription is embedded in the Constitution, and in spite of the fact, Guttenberg has absolutely no mandate from the electorate to abolish conscription, he has single-handedly tried to box through the change under the pretext of having to save money – and with a vehemence that has earned him the sobriquet „Rumpelstilzen“.

According to the media, Guttenberg is going ahead and implementing the administrative measures for de facto abolishion of conscription as if he had legitimate authority, prompting the FTD to ask today whether the CDU has lost control of him.
