Jordan's King Abdullah II says it may take a couple of years to replace the government he has appointed with a democratically elected one.
King Abdullah said that it should be “clear to all that if you start now building political parties, you might need at least two or three years to render these parties mature and well enough established to make gains in legislative elections, and, subsequently, to implement their programs on the ground,” AP reported on Tuesday.

The Jordanian king made the remarks during a meeting with a group of young Jordanians in Amman.
He also claimed that the government is working on laws relevant to political changes that are set to be put into effect this year.
However, Abdullah's comments flatly contradict his earlier promises of swift political reforms.

The Jordanian people have been pressuring King Abdullah to institute reforms and relinquish his extensive powers, which include the right to appoint cabinet ministers and dissolve the parliament.
The Arab Spring has also come to Jordan, and there have been a number of demonstrations in the kingdom since January, in which the people have criticized the limited nature of the reforms.
