Japanese meteorological authorities have issued evacuation advisories for more than one million people in the prefectures of Kagoshima, Kumamoto, Miyazaki and Ehime.
Weather officials warn the rain front will linger over Kyushu and other regions of western Japan through Thursday.
They are urging people to be on high alert for mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas as well as thunderstorms and tornados.
