Why is the coronavirus death toll so low in California, hovering around 550? Herd immunity?

They believe the reason why this is, is because of herd immunity. That since places in California like L.A. and San Francisco have a high density of Chinese and the Chinese have been flying in and out of there since November, when the coronavirus was said to really be hitting China but covered up, that the virus actually hit California first in November. And since there was no stay-at-home orders in those early months like they now have in New York where it is theorized the virus came much later, and where it is theorized it's causing the virus to actually incubate and get worse, the herd immunity phenomena held true in California, thus far less deaths and far less spread of the virus, while the opposite remains true in places like New York.

What is herd immunity?

As morbid as it may sound to some, by allowing diseases and viruses such as influenza and the coronavirus to run their natural course in society, those with weak immune systems will likely perish while those with strong immune systems will likely survive. Those with strong immune systems either by lifestyle decisions and or genetics, will have a very high survival rate, while those with weak immune systems either by lifestyle decisions and or genetics, will likely perish.

The philosophy of humanity embracing the herd immunity mentality, thus not sheltering themselves but rather allowing nature to run its course, is that the resistance to the spread of a contagious disease within a population will result in a sufficiently high proportion of individuals becoming immune to the disease thus strengthening the overall collective tenfold.

Now, this is not only a safe practice but an encouraged practice with diseases and viruses that have a good survival rate such as influenza and the coronavirus. However, with extremely deadly virus that have a mortality rate of like 80% (the acceptable mortality rate is highly debated) or higher such as HIV, such a practice of course would not be encouraged.
