National Space Academy reveals likely identity of 'burning object' spotted in Cambs sky

However, an explanation for the sighting has now been offered by experts from the National Space Academy, an organisation for space education.
Sophie Allan, Head of Learning and Teaching at the centre, said it was likely to be contrail from a high altitude jet.
Allan added that the trail was illuminated by the setting sun and said: "Because of the low angle of the sun, and the red-orange colour, much more of the contrail will be lit up."
Contrail is a term for the line-shaped clouds left behind when aircraft pass in the sky, comprising primarily of ice crystals.
But why did the object appear to be moving? Allan explained: "As the sun gets lower in the sky, the portion of the contrail lit up will 'move forwards' making it appear as if it is moving, when its actually just the sun scanning through the trail.
"The 'twirling' can be explained by high altitude winds disturbing & causing turbulence," Allan said.
She added that a cargo plane had flown overhead at 34,000 feet minutes before the photo was taken, "which would be right for this kind of effect".
