Tens of thousands of Germans have taken to the streets of Stuttgart to protest a disputed railway project in another challenge to Chancellor Angela Merkel's government.

Christoph Wertz, an organizer of the demonstration, said that around 100,000 people turned out on Saturday to oppose plans to relocate the city's much loved train station, which was built between the two world wars by architect Paul Bonatz.

據台灣中廣新聞網報道，德國西南部城市斯圖加特30日爆發示威遊行，數千民眾抗議一項鐵路新建計劃並與員警發生衝突，警方動用水龍頭、並發射催淚瓦斯、辣椒水驅散抗議民眾，造成至少116人受傷。

發動抗議示威的組織者表示，有上萬民眾響應號召，參與和平抗議。不過，警方稱，只有1500到2000人參與示威。當局出動一千多名員警，阻止示威人群並造成100多人受傷。而組織者稱，至少有300人受傷。

斯圖加特市長對發生衝突並造成民眾受傷深表遺憾。這是德國近年來首次出現示威演變成暴力衝突的事故。

據悉，衝突爆發的關鍵在於德國當局斥資41億歐元的新建鐵路計劃。根據這項計劃，斯圖加特市的火車站將被地下化，同時有300棵大樹及多棟歷史建築將被鏟平，此舉引發眾多環保人士的抗議。
