Although telescopes on Earth have significantly larger mirrors than the Hubble space telescope, the air turbulence in the atmosphere ensures that Hubble images are noticeably sharper than images taken by VLT & Co. But that no longer applies: ESO today presented test images obtained with the aid of a new adaptive optics system. The results are spectacular.

Thanks to the new system, astronomers hope for much more detailed views of a multitude of objects - from super-massive black holes in the centers of distant galaxies, to star clusters and supernovae, to objects in our own solar system.
