自今年7月起，阿拉斯加北冰洋沿岸陸續有環斑海豹的屍體沖上岸，死亡的海豹後鰭出血、眼睛和鼻子周圍皮膚發炎紅腫、身體毛髮呈斑狀脫落，疑遭神秘病毒入侵。
阿拉斯加費爾班克斯大學教授凱利説：「我們最近收到受感染海豹的組織樣本，以進行放射性檢驗，有關海豹是在聖勞倫斯島附近捕獲。」
當地部分研究團隊擔心，海豹死亡或與福島核電站輻射泄漏事件有關。凱利表示，檢驗結果數周後才會出爐。
自日本「311」地震後，美國科學家陸續對太平洋海水進行輻射檢驗，但至今未有海水受輻射污染的證據。美國國家海洋和大氣管理局（NOAA）以及魚類和野生動物保護局（FWS）過去數週一直研究海豹染病原因，但無法查出結果。
