This past May, President Trump made the decision to withdraw the United States participation in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), an agreement that would allow the eventual lifting of sanctions levied against Iran if the country would scale back its nuclear development program over the next two decades by eliminating its stockpile of enriched uranium and gas centrifuges.

President Trump repeatedly stated during his campaign and after his inauguration that the Obama Administration had made a bad deal with the Iranians and that he would not support JCPoA, and would reimpose U.S. sanctions against Iran. These sanctions reinitiated by the United States not only are directed against Iran, but also as secondary sanctions against any companies or countries that continue to do business with Iran.

Now the other five powers that were part of the original negotiation are reaching out to Iran to “ensure the continued implementation” of the agreement independent of United States foreign policy.
