A new opinion poll says the number of Americans opposed to the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is at an all time high.

The CNN opinion poll found that 62 percent of the American people now think that the war in Afghanistan neither can be won, nor should it be fought at all, the Press TV correspondent in Washington reported on Thursday.
The poll also found that 69 percent of the Americans are now opposed to the US war in Iraq and favored the US President Barack Obama's plan to withdraw 50,000 US troops from the country.
The poll, on the other hand, shows 30 percent of Americans support the wars.
About 50-thousand American soldiers will remain in the war-torn Iraq until the end of 2011 to help train Iraqi forces. The nearly seven and a half year war has claimed the lives of nearly 4500 American troops and cost more than $900 billion.

It is estimated that the US war in Afghanistan will cost nearly $105 billion in the 2010 fiscal year. The figure is expected to rise in 2011, as costs per service member in Afghanistan are almost twice as expensive as they are in Iraq.

The United States has about 87,000 troops involved in the Afghan war and with more deployments on the way, the number is expected to reach over 100,000 by next year.

The combined costs for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have surpassed one-trillion dollars.

More Americans think Obama is Muslim

Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:36PM
Nearly one in every five Americans says Obama is a Muslim.

The number of Americans who think President Barack Obama is a Muslim has significantly increased since his inauguration last year.

Pew Research Center has conducted a new national survey showing that nearly one-in-five Americans, or 18 percent, think Obama is a Muslim, up from 11 percent in March 2009.

The findings show that only about 34 percent of American adults think Obama is a Christian. This is while in 2009, 48 percent of Americans believed he was a Christian.
Pew further mentioned that 43 percent of Americans say they do not know what their president's religion is.

White House has expressed dismay over the poll results, blaming "misinformation campaigns" by the president's opponents.

"While the president has been diligent and personally committed to his own Christian faith, there are certainly folks who are intent on spreading falsehoods about the president and his values and beliefs," the Washington Post quoted Joshua DuBois, a faith adviser, as saying.

The survey was completed before Obama's recent comments on supporting the proposed construction of the Ground Zero mosque.

"As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country," said Obama at a White House Iftar meal for Muslims on Friday.

"That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," he said.

"This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."

Although his comments drew heavy criticism, Obama said on NBC television that he does not "regret" supporting the construction of the mosque.
