(English version from my friend, I think she doesn't mind this to be re-shared)
No matter what your political stance is, if a police thinks that someone has committed a crime, he can arrest him, but he cannot assault him, use violence to hurt him, and even to the extent of causing him to be permanently disabled. This is the basic rule of law and conscience threshold in a civilized society.
If you think that the youngster has committed a crime and you therefore support the police to use violence as disciplinary measure, then, sorry. You are terribly wrong. The power given to the Hong Kong police by the law is only to enforce the law, not to convict a crime, and definitely not to exercise corporal punishment. Moreover, the maximum sentence of a conviction in Hong Kong is only lifetime imprisonment. There is no sentence for physical punishment, torture or any form of violent treatment.
Simply put, what the police has done has gone beyond and above the law, all law enforcement agencies, the Court system, and even the power of the government itself.
Whatever political problem there is should be resolved by politics; If the police believes a crime is committed, it is a matter of the law and should be handled by the judiciary system.
There has never been an option that the police should use violence to resolve matters themselves.
Respect life, respect the law.
