SOMARK識別系統是一種無晶片射頻識別（RFID）平台，典型的RFID系統使用微型晶片和天線嵌入到一個對象的標籤。該SOMARK無晶片系統減去高成本的晶片和天線，取而代之的是簡單地使用一種電子墨水去創建識別'標籤'，這種墨水是直接存上或存入對象中，它會幫目標創做無縫混合和確定該目標。

DETECTIONThere are two ways SOMARK ink can be read. The first involves a handheld reader that only works when the surface of the reader is in direct contact with the tattoo. This method of reading is quick, easy and inexpensive. The second method of reading is more involved and expensive, but allows for remote reading of the tattoo similar to the way RFID tattoos are read through the use of a panel reader.

蘋果報導有律師會見10月30日因抗議屯門不明氣體洩漏而被捕的青年時，發現當事人前臂上被警員以不易脫色的水筆，寫上一組數字編號。該名律師見狀大感震驚，認為警方做法猶如二戰時納粹德國為關押在集中營囚犯紋上編號一樣。(配圖: 二戰集中營猶太幸存者)
