Vatican scientists have sparked a climate change row after backing a discredited UN report that claimed ice on the Himalays could melt by 2035.

The Pontifical Academy of Sciences yesterday hosted a conference on the causes and consequences of retreating mountain glaciers.

Its final report, titled Fate of Mountain Glaciers in the Anthropocene, again frets over the fate of the ice, is signed by independent glaciologists, climate scientists, meteorologists and chemists.

But it cites Pachauri's early controversial UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment report as evidence.

Among criticism of the four-year-old findings were the use of non-peer reviewed sources from the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the World Wildlife Fund, and student dissertations.
However, hundreds of experts have continued to back the UN report, including 250 American scientists who sent an backing letter to federal agencies in March 2010.

It stated: 'None of the handful of mis-statements (out of hundreds and hundreds of unchallenged statements) remotely undermines the conclusion that "warming of the climate system is unequivocal" and that most of the observed increase in global average temperatures since the mid-twentieth century is very likely due to observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.'

The papal report could be a sign in a shifting of position by Vatican scientists.
Climate scientist Michael Mann said he attended a similar conference in 2003, where the organisation's president, Antonio Zichichi, was a sceptic.
Mr Mann told foxnews.com: 'Zichichi has the ear of the Vatican on all matters of science and science policy. So I interpret this as, perhaps, a change of heart on his part.'
