I heard recently about the Doomsday Clock, which I thought had something to do with the threat of nuclear war. Is something supposed to happen with the clock this week? - Patti, Littleton, Colo.

The minute hand on that metaphoric timepiece, which is intended to represent how close humanity is to catastrophe, is regularly adjusted, depending on various threats, and it's scheduled to be moved Jan. 14.

The clock was created in 1947 by a group of University of Chicago scientists who had helped develop the first atomic weapons in the Manhattan Project and feared that their discovery had put mankind closer to its destruction. They hit upon a clock to symbolize how near the threat was, initially setting it at seven minutes to midnight, their representation of total destruction, according to an article at MSNBC.

Originally the threat was strictly nuclear, but it has since been expanded to include other potentially destructive technologies as well as climate change. The clock was last reset by the board of directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, the group's publication, in January 2007, when it was moved from seven to five minutes before midnight.
The hand has been adjusted 18 times, backward and forward, since it was originally set. It has not been announced which way the hand will move tomorrow or how far. The board reportedly has considered such factors as nuclear disarmament negotiations, civilian nuclear power, threats of nuclear terrorism and climate change, MSNBC reports. The decision will be announced online tomorrow at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time .
