Tax revenues in Germany have suffered a "massive collapse" in January just as more money is being sent into the EU coffers, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

The federal, state and local governments of Germany had 7.8% less money flowing in from tax revenues in January 2010 than in January 2009, a report by the finance ministry reveals.

Revenue flowing into the federal government coffers dropped by 11.7% in January - but the reason for the shortfall is the "strong increase in transfers to the EU," reports the newspaper.

The report does not say how much money is being transferred to the EU from the federal government or for what purpose.

Mit 36 Milliarden Euro flossen Bund, Ländern und Gemeinden 7,8 Prozent weniger zu als noch vor zwölf Monaten, teilte das Bundesfinanzministerium in seinem neuen Monatsbericht vom Montag mit. Besonders kräftig ging es beim Bund mit 11,7 Prozent bergab, nach einem Minus von 5,2 Prozent im Vormonat. Grund dafür sind stark erhöhte Abführungen an die EU.
Auch die Länder nahmen mit 9,1 Prozent erheblich....
