Germany's most populated state has confirmed purchasing stolen Swiss bank data that is said to contain a list of tax evaders with Swiss accounts.

In 2008, Germany was involved in a tax scandal over the clandestine purchase of data stolen from a bank in neighboring Liechtenstein.

The move was backed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, but the issue sparked a moral dilemma in the country, with some politicians arguing against the purchase of stolen material.

Switzerland, which has a 2-trillion-dollar stake in offshore banking, has been fighting to keep its cherished bank secrecy policy.

However, the Swiss government conceded to reforms on Thursday, saying it would no longer permit the flow of untaxed money into its banks.
