US President Barack Obama's Democratic Party has suffered another major setback as one more top Democratic senator has announced his retirement plans, hinting rifts in Congress.
美國總統奧巴馬的民主黨遭受另一次重大挫折,因為再多一個頂級的民主黨參議員已宣布退休計劃,暗示國會內的裂痕。
Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana would join four other Democrats who have decided not to run for reelection in November elections.
參議員埃文貝赫將加入其他四名民主黨員,已決定在11月的選舉不競選連任。
He cited congressional 'malpractice' as the main reason for his planned departure.

"Congress is not operating as it should," he told reporters in Indianapolis on Monday.

He criticized excessive partisanship on Capitol Hill and said, "I am not motivated by strident partisanship or ideology," adding that he was after "solutions not slogans, progress not politics."

“I love working for the people of Indiana; I love helping our citizens make the most of their lives, but I do not love Congress," Bayh added.

Bayh's retirement plan has fueled serious concerns in the Democratic caucus about potential losses in the midterm elections and is also viewed as a major blow to Obama, as he has reportedly failed to convince the senator against retiring.

Bayh joins four other Democrats that have announced similar decisions.

The list includes Democratic congressional heavyweights Christopher Dodd and Byron Dorgan.

Democrats have already lost a Senate seat in Massachusetts to Republicans, stripping them of their short-lived absolute majority in the chamber.
