Afghan, NATO and US troops are gearing up for a massive "offensive against Taliban militants" in southern Afghanistan. Hundreds of Afghan families have fled their homes in Helmand to avoid being caught in crossfire. US-led forces are frequently condemned for their lack of concern for civilian lives.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has denounced the killing of civilians, which fuels anti-American sentiments in Afghanistan. Thousands of Afghan civilians have been killed since the US invasion which was launched to allegedly destroy the militancy in Afghanistan.

US forces have shot eight Iraqi people, most of them 'innocent bystanders,' in a raid in a village southeast of Baghdad, Iraqi provincial officials say.
美軍在巴格達東南部的一個村莊襲擊,射殺 8名伊拉克人民,他們大多數是'無辜的旁觀者,'伊拉克省級官員說。
Iraqi provincial council officials described the US raid as slaughter and demanded financial compensation for the relatives of the victims.

Maysan province governor Mohammed Shia al-Sudany told state-run television that eight people were killed, one wounded and 12 arrested in the village 75 km (46 miles) north of the provincial capital of Amara.

"What happened this morning was a massacre in every sense of the word. Eight people were killed. Most of them were innocent," Reuters quoted Sudany as saying.

The US military, however, said the raid was against suspected members of what it called a terrorist Iran-backed group.

"The joint security team was fired upon by individuals dispersed in multiple residential buildings ... members of the security team returned fire, killing individuals assessed to be enemy combatants," the US military said in a statement on Friday.

"While the number of casualties has not yet been confirmed, initial reports indicate five individuals were killed," the statement added.

This is while Iraqi officials have called on US troops to release all those arrested during the raid and to apologize for the attack.

卡爾扎伊關於平民死亡 警告 美軍
Karzai warns US troops about civilian deaths
Sat, 13 Feb 2010 10:35:31 GMT

Afghan President Hamid Karzai urges all troops operating in Afghanistan to avoid civilian casualties during the new military operation in the country.

Thousands of US troops have launched a major offensive in the southern Afghan town of Marjah in Helmand Province to allegedly rout out Taliban militants in the region.

The assault started on Saturday with airborne attacks and involved 4,500 US Marines, 300 US soldiers and 1,500 Afghan troops.

The Afghan President's office released a statement on Saturday, saying that Karzai "instructed" the troops involved in the operation "to exercise absolute caution to avoid harming civilians."

"The president urges Afghan and foreign military authorities to continue to consult the local people, fully coordinate their actions and to avoid using air power in areas where civilians can be at risk," the statement added.

Karzai issued the statement after thirty-four Marjah elders sent a letter outlining their worries to the provincial government.

The US announced the decision to launch the operation earlier to help reduce Afghan officials' criticism about civilian casualties which has been a vexed issue between the two sides.

But the residents of the town and the villagers around Marjah have been facing difficulties to flee the region, which is surrounded by a treacherous network of canals and heavily mined fields and roads.

Karzai also called on Taliban militants to lay down their arms.

"President karzai calls upon all Afghan Taliban to use this as an opportunity to renounce violence and re-integrate into civilian life alongside other Afghans for the welfare of their country," the statement said.

Earlier a local Taliban commander Qari Fazluddin had told Reuters that about 2,000 militants were ready to fight in Marjah, a town considered to be a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan.

Taliban, which has described the operation as "more propaganda than military necessity," says it has already started launching mortars, killing at least 25 foreign troops in fresh attacks.

Afghan civilians - killed in militant attacks and bombings as well as in coalition forces' "counterterrorism raids" - have been the main victims of the long-fought war.
