Geneva - The worst of the swine flu pandemic is over, a senior World Health Organization official said Thursday. "The worst on a global level is probably over. We are now in a transition period," said Keiji Fukuda, the WHO's pandemic chief.
日內瓦 - 最嚴重的豬流感大流行現在過去,一位高級的世衛官員週四說, 最惡劣的在全球水平可能過去了。我們正處於一個過渡期,”世衛的流行病首席福田敬二說。
The A(H1N1) virus, as it is also known, first appeared in April and by June was declared a pandemic, meaning it had spread globally.
To date, some 15,000 people around the world have died from the disease, which was however mostly mild in nature.
Seasonal influenza was again becoming the main flu observed, Fukuda noted.
The regular common flu kills up to a half a million people annually, previous WHO estimates have said.
The WHO has come under criticism from certain developed countries for its handling of the pandemic, with some governments feeling there was an overreaction.
The health agency has stressed it was being cautious given the unpredictable nature of such viruses and based its advice on scientific data available.
