There's still no official explanation for a fireball that was reported by residents of seven states, from Florida to Oklahoma around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

Dr. Tony Hall of the UALR Physics and Astronomy department says the most obvious explanation for the bright flash of light in the sky was a meteor. "They're common," Hall says. "You see falling stars all the time and they're essentially the same thing. It's just a fireball is a bigger object, so it gets brighter and tends to last longer."

Hall says most shooting stars are caused by particles the size of a grain of sand entering the atmosphere, but Tuesday night's flash was more likely caused by a space rock or chunk of ice the size of a baseball to that of a basketball.
