US drone attack claims 20 lives in Pakistan
Sun, 17 Jan 2010 10:01:13 GMT

At least 20 people have been killed in Pakistan in the latest US drone attacks that picked up pace after seven CIA agents were killed in late December.
The Sunday attack has reportedly targeted a militant compound in an area near Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region. However, the identity of those killed in the air raid has not been confirmed.

The number of CIA-operated drone strikes along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border has increased after a Jordanian double agent crossed into Afghanistan from the tribal lands and struck a US intelligence center in late 2009.
Over the weekend, eleven people were killed in two drone attacks in northwestern Pakistan.

The US has carried out dozens of missile strikes in northwestern Pakistan over the past twelve months. Washington claims it is targeting militants.
But reports say the attacks have repeatedly killed civilians. Last week, Pakistani officials warned US Special Envoy Richard Holbrooke that the US drone attacks could endanger ties.

There have been nationwide rallies in Pakistan against high civilian casualties inflicted by the US operations.

Pakistan Islami Jamiat-e Talaba staged an anti-American rally on Saturday to show strong resentment at US drone attacks in the country.

Demonstrators demanded that the government take a strong stand against the US presence in the country.

Villagers in southern Afghanistan have claimed that Afghan and Nato forces killed 13 demonstrators after a group of people took to the streets to protest the alleged desecration of the Quran.
Residents in Garmsir district of Helmand province on Tuesday said that Nato-led forces raided a house in the area on Sunday and destroyed copies of the holy book in a local mosque.
Haji Abdul Manan, one of the protesters, told the German Press Agency, DPA: “The people came out of their homes today to protest this action of foreign forces in a peaceful way, but the Afghan and international forces opened fire on us.”
He said more than 20 others were wounded in the firing.
Habibullah Jan, another protester said: “We have proof that they destroyed our holy Quran. We can show them to [President Hamid] Karzai’s government or the foreign forces.”
A security official in the province said six people were killed in the shooting, but said they were investigating to find out whether they were civilians or Taliban-linked fighters.
Isaf denial
The Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf), however, has rejected the allegations, saying Afghan forces backed by coalition troops had conducted an operation in the area on Sunday, but not a shot was fired and no one was detained.
“The joint force protected the dignity of all innocent civilians during the operation,” the Isaf statement said.
The statement said an Afghan official was shot during Tuesday’s protest, adding that “Isaf service members identified the insurgent sniper, shot and killed him. There were no other injuries or shots fired,” it said.
Major General Michael Regner, an Isaf spokesman, said: “As partners with the Afghan people, we will thoroughly investigate allegations to determine the facts.”
Hundreds of people protested against US forces last year after claims that troops desecrated the Quran in the central province of Wardak in October.
Both the Afghan and US officials rejected the allegations and said it was part of Taliban propaganda to provoke public anger against the international forces in the country.
There are more than 110,000 international troops currently in the country including around 68,000 US troops.
As part of a military escalation to turn the tide against the Taliban fighters, the US government has planned to send 30,000 additional soldiers by summer.

北約說3名美軍在阿富汗南部被殺
NATO says 3 US troops killed in south Afghanistan
By RAHIM FAIEZ, Associated Press Writer Rahim Faiez, Associated Press Writer – 33 mins ago
KABUL – Three U.S. service members were killed Monday in fighting in southern Afghanistan, underscoring the unrelenting violence in the Taliban heartland as the Obama administration steps up efforts to rout the insurgents.
喀布爾- 週一3名美國軍人員在阿富汗南部的戰鬥中被殺,在奧巴馬政府加強力度去擊潰叛軍時,強調了在塔利班心臟地帶沒有緩和的暴力。
NATO said the Americans were killed in an engagement with enemy forces but gave no more details.
The deaths raised to at least 10 the number of U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to an Associated Press tally.
Officials said earlier Monday that bombs killed another American service member and two Afghan road construction workers in separate attacks Sunday in southern Afghanistan.
The southern half of the country has frequently been hit by attacks as the U.S. military builds up its presence in the area. Most of the 30,000 additional American troops that President Barack Obama has ordered to Afghanistan will be deployed there.
A vehicle carrying the road crew hit a roadside bomb Sunday in the Nawa district in Helmand province, according to the Interior Ministry. It said two workers were killed, and two were wounded.
The attack occurred a day after a British correspondent and a U.S. Marine were killed by a roadside bomb in the same area.
Sunday Mirror journalist Rupert Hamer, 39, was the first British journalist killed in the conflict.
Hamer and photographer Philip Coburn, 43, were accompanying a U.S. Marine patrol Saturday when their vehicle was hit by a makeshift bomb near the village of Nawa, the British Defense Ministry said. Coburn was seriously wounded.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Monday expressed condolences to Hamer's family as well as to the British media. Karzai said he appreciated the "brave journalists" who risk their lives in Helmand.
Obama has said U.S. troops will start withdrawing from Afghanistan in July 2011, and American and Afghan officials already are preparing for the transition.
The Afghan government has announced plans to take over the U.S.-run prison at the Bagram air base. No date has been set for the handover, but officials have said it could occur by the end of the year.
The U.S. military opened a new prison to replace the original facility, which was tainted by allegations of human rights abuses.
Navy Vice Adm. Robert Harward, the commander of U.S. detainee operations in Afghanistan, said some prisoners could be held by the U.S. in so-called field detention sites after the handover, but they would be turned over to the Afghans upon request.
He also said the cases of several non-Afghans in U.S. custody would be reviewed. There are about 750 inmates at Bagram.
"Those will be all under Afghan operations and any U.S. detention will fall under that system," he said at a news conference.

阿富汗襲擊 殺4名美部隊,一名英軍士兵
Afghan attacks kill 4 US troops, British soldier
Mon Jan 4, 9:41 am ET
KABUL – A roadside bombing killed four U.S. service members — the first American combat deaths of the year in Afghanistan — while a British soldier died during a foot patrol elsewhere in the volatile south of the country, officials said Monday.
喀布爾-路邊炸彈炸死4名美國服務人員-今年在阿富汗第一宗美戰鬥人員死亡;而一名英國士兵在其他地方-動盪的南部地區-徒步巡邏中死亡,國家官員今天說。
A statement from NATO's International Security Assistance Force said the explosion that killed the U.S. service members took place Sunday in the south, but did not give further details on the location or the victims' branch of service.
Afghan insurgents are increasingly turning to improvised explosive devices in their fight against Afghan and international forces. Of the 304 U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan last year, 129 were caused by IEDs, according to a tally by The Associated Press.
The deaths are the first U.S. fatalities from hostile action in Afghanistan this year. One U.S. service member died of noncombat causes so far in 2010.
The British soldier died while on foot patrol Sunday in Helmand province, the British Ministry of Defense said.
The Afghan Defense Ministry said its soldiers killed 10 Taliban fighters in battles Sunday in northern Kunduz province's Imam Sahib district, which borders Tajikistan. One soldier was wounded in the clash.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Monday ordered parliament to postpone its winter recess until a new list of Cabinet nominees is announced, following last week's stinging rejection of most of his choices.
The rejection by lawmakers of 17 of 24 nominees was a surprising slap and an obstacle to Karzai getting his second term in office into full operation and focusing on badly needed reforms.
Karzai's credibility both at home and abroad was shaken by the fraud-plagued presidential elections in August. In the vote on the Cabinet nominees Saturday, lawmakers rejected nominees viewed as Karzai's political cronies, those believed to be under the influence of warlords and others deemed unqualified. The parliament did approve his retention of incumbents in the key portfolios of defense, interior and finance.
The order, under a constitutional provision that allows the president to call extraordinary sessions of parliament, states that Karzai will introduce a new slate of Cabinet nominees within a few days. Karzai clearly hopes to have a full government in place before the Jan. 28 international conference in London on Afghanistan.
Also Monday, NATO said a joint Afghan-international force discovered a huge cache of marijuana and turned it over to police for destruction. NATO said the cache contained up to 28,000 cubic feet (800 cubic meters) of marijuana — the equivalent of about seven standard semitrailers.
As the U.S. and other Western nations have tried to help Afghanistan stamp out its poppy fields — the country is the world's leading opium producer — an increasing number of farmers have turned to marijuana, which is receiving less attention from authorities.
The Interior Ministry said 256 pounds (106 kilograms) of heroin were seized Sunday in an operation in Badakhshan province, and 4,100 pounds (1,900 kilograms ) of opium were incinerated Sunday in Helmand province in a joint operation of counternarcotics police and U.S. Marines.

美軍無人駕駛飛機在巴基斯坦襲擊 殺死5人:官員
US drone attack kills five in Pakistan: officials
From correspondents in Peshawar
From: AFP
January 04, 2010 6:27AM

US missiles have flattened an extremist hideout in Pakistan's lawless tribal belt, killing five militants in the latest strike in a recent spike in drone attacks, Pakistani officials said today.
美國導彈已將在巴基斯坦部落不管地區的極端主義者藏身地夷為平地,以無人駕駛飛機襲擊,最近的攻勢已造成5名武裝分死亡,巴基斯坦官員今天說。
Yesterday's attack targeted a house in Mosakki village, about 25km east of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, and was the third suspected US missile attack in the tribal district in less than a week.

"There may have been an important figure hiding in the house," a Pakistani security official in Miranshah told AFP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak about the sensitive strikes.
"A total of five militants have been killed, two are local and three are foreigners. One among the foreigners is an Arab," the security official said, adding that the identity of the other two is not yet known.

Suspected US drones have increasingly targeted North Waziristan, a bastion of al-Qaeda fighters and the Haqqani network that attacks US and NATO troops fighting against the Taliban in neighbouring Afghanistan.
Washington is putting increased pressure on Pakistan to tackle militants who use its soil to launch attacks in Afghanistan and American officials have said the highly secretive drone program has eliminated some top fighters.
"One US drone fired two missiles on a house.... The target was this house and a car parked outside was also destroyed," a senior Pakistani security official earlier told AFP on condition of anonymity.
Local administrative and intelligence officials confirmed the attack and the death toll.
North Waziristan borders the Afghan province of Khost, where a suicide bomber killed seven CIA agents and an eighth American on a US base last week in the deadliest attack on the US spy agency since 1983.
Washington has put Pakistan at the heart of a new strategy for winning the eight-year war against the Taliban in Afghanistan, saying success depends on dismantling militant sanctuaries along the porous border.
Around eight US missile strikes in North Waziristan have killed 49 people in the past month, although the identities of those killed are hard to verify as the deaths are deep in Taliban-controlled territory.
The attacks on Pakistani territory fuel anti-American sentiment in the nuclear-armed Muslim nation and the government in Islamabad publicly condemns the strikes. Analysts say, however, that the strikes have Islamabad's tacit approval.
More than 70 US drone missile strikes have killed at least 665 people in Pakistan since August 2008. The United States does not confirm drone attacks, but its military is the only force that deploys drones in the region.

North Waziristan neighbours South Waziristan, where Pakistan has been focusing its most ambitious military offensive yet against homegrown Taliban militants. It sent about 30,000 troops into the region on October 17.

巴基斯坦襲擊是對反塔利班部落的一個警告
Pakistan attack a warning to anti-Taliban tribes
SHAH HASAN KHEL, Pakistan – A northwest Pakistani village that tried to resist Taliban infiltration mourned on Saturday the victims of an apparent revenge suicide bombing that killed 96 residents during a volleyball game.
巴基斯坦哈桑海勒網站消息-一條巴基斯坦西北村莊試圖反抗塔利班的滲透,星期六哀悼一個明顯是為報復的自殺式炸彈襲擊中的受害者,96居民在排球被殺。
The attack on the outskirts of Lakki Marwat city was one of the deadliest in recent Pakistani history and sent a bloody New Year's message to Pakistanis who dare take on the armed Islamist extremists. As villagers in Shah Hasan Khel held funeral services and rescuers searched rubble for more bodies, many in the area were too terrified to speculate on who staged the assault.
The suicide bomber detonated some 550 pounds (250 kilograms) of high-intensity explosives on the crowded field in the village during a volleyball tournament held Friday near a meeting of anti-Taliban elders. The elders, who had helped set up an anti-Taliban militia in the area, were probably the actual target, police said.
Lakki Marwat district is near South Waziristan, a tribal region where the army has been battling the Pakistani Taliban since October.
The military operation was undertaken with the backing of the U.S., which is eager for Pakistan to free its tribal belt of militants believed to be involved in attacks on Western troops in Afghanistan. The offensive has provoked apparent reprisal attacks that had already killed more than 500 people in Pakistan before Friday's blast.
Militants have struck all across the nuclear-armed country, and they appear increasingly willing to hit groups beyond security forces. No group claimed responsibility for Friday's blast, but that is not uncommon when many civilians are killed.
Across Pakistan's northwest, where the police force is thin, underpaid and under-equipped, various tribes have taken security into their own hands over the past two years by setting up citizen militias to fend off the Taliban.
The government has encouraged such "lashkars," and in some areas they have proven key to reducing militant activity.
Still, tribal leaders who face off with the militants do so at high personal risk. Several suicide attacks have targeted meetings of anti-Taliban elders, and militants also often go after individuals. One reason militancy has spread in Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal belt is because insurgents have slain dozens of tribal elders and filled a power vacuum.
Shah Hasan Khel village "has been a hub of militants. Locals set up a militia and expelled the militants from this area. This attack seems to be reaction to their expulsion," local police Chief Ayub Khan told reporters.
Footage on private TV channels showed villagers gathered Saturday to say funeral prayers as covered bodies lay before them. Piles of beige mud-bricks were nearby, what was left of some three dozen homes toppled by the massive blast.
Mohammed Qayyum, 22, tried to avoid crying Saturday as he recounted how his younger brother died when the explosion shook the neighborhood. His family's house was damaged.
"After the blast, I heard cries, I saw dust, and I saw injured and dead bodies," said Qayyum, who escaped injury. "See this rubble, see these destroyed homes? Everybody was happy before the explosion, but today we are mourning."
Like many others in the village that had prided itself on standing up to the militants, Qayyum refused to comment when asked who he thought was behind the bombing.
Mahmood Shah, a former security chief for Pakistan's tribal regions, described the attack as a big blow to Pakistanis resisting the Taliban, but noted past militant strikes had not stymied the resistance.
"I'm sure that even with this blow it will not make much difference to the resolve of the people to fight the war on terrorism with their own means," Shah said.
In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton condemned the attack.
"The United States will continue to stand with the people of Pakistan in their efforts to chart their own future free from fear and intimidation and will support their efforts to combat violent extremism and bolster democracy," she said in a statement.
Authorities said about 300 people were on the field at the time of Friday's blast and security had been provided for the games and the tribal elders' meeting. Local administrator Asmatullah Khan said Saturday that 90 bodies had been identified, while six remained unknown. Thirty-six people were being treated at nearby medical centers.
Eight children, six paramilitary troops and two police were among the dead, police said.
Omar Gull, 35, a wounded paramilitary soldier, said the attacker drove recklessly into the crowd and people were trying to figure out what was happening when the explosives detonated. "It was then chaos," he said.
The attack was one of the deadliest in years, and the second deadliest since the latest wave of bloodshed began in October. A car bomb killed 112 people at a crowded market in Peshawar on Oct. 28.
Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani vowed Saturday to defeat militants, saying "the agenda of terrorists is to destabilize the country, to create panic and spread fear."

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – A suicide bomber set off an explosives-laden vehicle on a field during a volleyball tournament Friday in northwest Pakistan, killing at least 25 people, police said.
巴基斯坦據美聯社報導-一名自殺式襲擊者引爆一輛裝滿炸藥的汽車,星期五在巴基斯坦西北部在一場排球賽場地,殺死至少25人。
The blast occurred near Pakistan's tribal belt, and was the latest bloodshed to rattle the country since the army launched a military offensive against Taliban fighters in the South Waziristan tribal region. The operation has scattered insurgents but provoked apparent reprisal attacks that have killed more than 500 people since October.
Police said Friday's bombing in Lakki Marwat city, not far from South Waziristan, was possible retaliation for local residents' efforts to keep militants out of the area.
"The locality has been a hub of militants. Locals set up a militia and expelled the militants from this area. This attack seems to be reaction to their expulsion," local police chief Ayub Khan told reporters.
He said the bomber drove onto the field, which lies in a congested neighborhood, during the volleyball contest. Some nearby houses collapsed, and "we fear that some 10 or so people might have been trapped in the rubble," Khan said.

Another police official, Habib Khan, said at least 25 people died and several were wounded.
Also Friday, a suspected U.S. missile struck a car carrying alleged militants in North Waziristan tribal region, killing three men, two intelligence officials said. It was the second such strike in less than a day.
The strikes are part of the U.S. campaign to eliminate high-value militant targets that use Pakistan as a safe haven to plan attacks in neighboring Afghanistan and on the West.

The one Friday happened near Mir Ali, a major town in the region, two intelligence officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record. Shortly afterward, Taliban fighters arrived at the scene of the attack in the village of Ghundi and moved the bodies to an undisclosed location, the officials said.
Thursday's missile strike was also near Mir Ali, hitting a house and killing three people.
U.S. officials rarely discuss the strikes, and Pakistan publicly condemns them, though it is widely believed to aid them secretly.
Karachi, the country's largest city, came to a virtual standstill Friday after religious and political leaders called for a general strike to protest a bombing that killed 44 people and subsequent riots.
The city's major markets, stores and business centers were closed, along with financial institutions that had already planned to shut because of New Year's Day. Public transportation was halted and gas stations were shut down.
Monday's bombing occurred in the midst of a procession of minority Shiite Muslims during the Islamic holy month of Muharram. Afterward, angry protesters went on a rampage, setting fires to about 2,000 stores that took three days to completely put out.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik, on a visit to Karachi, said investigators were still determining if the attack was a suicide bombing.
He also questioned the claim of a purported Taliban spokesman, Asmatullah Shaheen, that the militant group was behind the attack. Local news reports on Friday quoted a more prominent Taliban spokesman, Azam Tariq, as denying that the Pakistani Taliban's central leadership had approved the attack, though he did not rule out the possibility that Shaheen's group had carried it out without approval.
Elsewhere in the northwest, a roadside bomb exploded near a car in the Bajur tribal region, killing an anti-Taliban tribal elder and five of his family members, said Nasib Shah, a local government official.
Bajur was the focus of a 2008-09 army offensive but still suffers some militant violence. Tribal leaders who support the government against the Taliban are frequent targets of attacks.

阿富汗 宣稱更多平民死亡
More civilian deaths claimed in Afghanistan
By AMIR SHAH, Associated Press Writer Amir Shah, Associated Press Writer – 1 hr 4 mins ago

KABUL – An airstrike by international forces in the southern Afghan province of Helmand killed seven civilians, two Taliban and wounded another civilian, an Afghan official said Friday.

喀布爾-一場由國際部隊在阿富汗南部赫爾曼德省的空襲,打死7名平民,兩名塔利班成員喪生和炸傷另一名平民,一名阿富汗官員今天說。
Dawud Ahmadi, spokesman for the provincial governor, said the attack took place Wednesday after an international patrol came under fire from insurgents and called for air support. NATO said it was aware of the reports and was investigating.
It is the second claim of civilian deaths in allied attacks in a week. The Afghan government says that 10 people were killed, including eight schoolchildren, in a village in eastern Kunar province in a nighttime raid by international forces last weekend.
Claims of civilians being killed in military operations are one of the most emotionally charged issues facing international forces. Although insurgents are responsible for the deaths of far more civilians, those blamed on coalition forces spark the most resentment and undermine the fight against the militants.
The attack in Kunar sparked protests by Afghans who have demanded that foreign troops leave the country.

On Friday, NATO said joint Afghan-international forces had captured a Taliban member in Kandahar province responsible for movement of weapons and components, and a member of the affiliated Haqqani insurgent group involved with weapons and explosives in Khost province.
Khost is the province where a suicide bomber penetrated a base and killed seven CIA employees Wednesday. A NATO spokesman said there was no immediate information on whether the Haqqani member's seizure was related to the attack, which raised concerns about the security at foreign bases.
Two former U.S. officials told The Associated Press that the bomber had been invited onto the base and had not been searched. One of the officials, a former senior intelligence employee, said the man was being courted as an informant and that it was the first time he had been brought inside the camp.
NATO also reported that a U.S. service member died Thursday in eastern Afghanistan of injuries not related to battle. It did not give further details.
The British Defense Ministry said that a soldier was killed Thursday in an explosion in Helmand province. The ministry's statement did not give details but said the soldier was working with a unit trying to lessen the threat of improvised explosive devices.
Such bombs have become a major element of the Taliban's strategy against foreign forces. Of the 108 British soldiers who died in Afghanistan in 2009, more than 70 percent were killed by IEDs.
Separately, five Afghan civilians — two women, two men and a driver — were killed Friday when their vehicle hit a bomb on a main road in Bala Murghab district in the northern province of Badghis, said Sharafuddin Majidi, spokesman for the provincial governor.
Also Friday, the deputy police chief of Khost province, Youqb Khan, said at least four security guards for a road construction crew were killed when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in the northern part of the province.
