"The simple answer is yes,” said Sharon Stanley, chief nurse and director, Red Cross Disaster Health and Mental Health Services. “The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is by being vaccinated.”

January 10-16 is designated National Influenza Vaccination Week and presents an opportunity for health professionals to get good information out about flu shots. Does getting the vaccination actually make you sick? That simply is not possible according to Stanley, though sometimes people happen to get the flu at about the same time they received the injection.

Should you get the seasonal flu shot too? Since H1N1 has been active since as early as spring 2009, many people feel they have already been exposed and wonder if they should get the vaccinations. Should you get both?
“You should still get it,” Stanley said. “Get both. Odds are most people have not been tested. It won’t be bad for you.”

Does the over the counter stuff work? There has been some question about the use of antiviral medicines; including over-the-counter products. Getting vaccinated is different than taking antiviral medication for the flu. The Red Cross chief nurse, Sharon Stanley, explained the difference between the two this way:

“Vaccines are used to prevent the influenza,” she said. “Antiviral is used two ways; to help prevent, but mainly to lessen the symptoms for people who are already sick.”The vaccinations are now more readily available than they were earlier. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages everyone to get vaccinated. Find a location near you and avoid getting the flu.

“Getting vaccinated is the first most important step you can take to avoid getting the flu,” said Stanley.
