With the opening of the Olympics one day away, RCMP quickly reacted on Thursday to a report of a suspicious object found in mid-afternoon near Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver.
隨著奧運會開幕還有一天,加拿大皇家騎警在週四對報告可疑物品作出迅速反應,它在下午中段被發現在北溫哥華的Lonsdale碼頭附近。
The Mounties immediately closed down the Seabus, trains and bus service, evacuated the area and brought in a robotic device to take the object to an enclosed area for a controlled detonation. A sniffer dog was brought in to check for any evidence of explosives.
皇家騎警立刻關閉海上巴士、火車和巴士服務,疏散該地區和帶來機械人工具,將物體帶往一封鎖區域作控制性引爆,一隻嗅探犬被引入去檢查任何炸藥的證據。
RCMP officer Mike McLaughlin told CTV moments after the controlled explosion that the object appeared to be a fairly common household item packaged in a way that looked a little suspicious. 在控制爆炸後不久,加拿大皇家騎警官員邁克麥克勞克林告訴 CTV,物體似乎是一個相當常見的家居項目,包裝的方式使人看起來有點懷疑。
RCMP Constable Marlene Morton said in an interview that the Mounties were “making sure to cover all bases” in the way they treated the incident.

The Olympic torch passed by Londsdale Quay on Wednesday. Constable Morton said police did not know whether the incident was related to the Olympics, which begins Friday evening. “There is no way we can tie the two together,” she said.

The SeaBus and Lonsdale Quay bus service resumed at 7 p.m., about four hours after police received the call.

Constable McLaughlin, of the RCMP’s North Vancouver detachment, later said the suspicious object was a fishing rod in a special shipping container.

The cylindrical package covered in tape was first spotted by a transit security guard near the SeaBus terminal next to Lonsdale Quay. Police made the decision to evacuate the area and shut down the SeaBus, he stated in a news release.

The Olympic security unit was aware of the incident and could have helped if needed, he said. However the local RCMP detachment handled the situation.

The owner of the fishing rod has been identified. “He no doubt feels foolish for his honest mistake,” Constable McLaughlin said. “During this time when the eyes of the world are upon Greater Vancouver, it is especially important to remember all your packages and not leave them behind,” he added.
