The US has reportedly test-fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile in a joint secretive military drill with Saudi Arabia.

The head of the US Missile Defense Agency, Lieutenant General Patrick O'Reilly, attended last week's launch of a Trident missile in Saudi Arabia, The Washington Post reported.

The missile launch takes place shortly after a visit by US Defense Secretary Robert Gates to Riyadh, where he held talks with Saudi officials on bolstering the kingdom's air and missile defense capabilities in the region.

Saudi Arabia has bought billions of dollars worth of US weapons over the past years, including missile defense hardware.

Jonathan Withington, a Pentagon spokesman, denied on Wednesday the launch of Trident or any other missile during the exercise, which began last week.

The spokesman confirmed that O'Reilly was in the region last week but rejected reports that he attended any missile launch.
