Greek Premier George Papandreou says Europe must help Athens solve its debt problems, dismissing calls for the expulsion of his cash-strapped country from the eurozone.

Papandreou told the European parliament on Thursday that EU leaders “should not miss” the opportunity to agree on a stand-by financial aid package at next week's EU summit.

The move is widely seen as a potential blow to the eurozone's credibility and could weaken the currency.

This is while EU powers like Germany are pushing to drive out nations in serious breach of the 16-nation monetary union's rules.

Greece's budget deficit is more than four times the 3 percent allowed in the eurozone.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has sought to reassure Greece that the bloc was ready to help Athens overcome its financial problems but provided no details of how this would be achieved.

Meanwhile, Athens was paralyzed on Thursday as students and taxi drivers staged rallies against the government's hugely unpopular austerity measures, causing traffic chaos.

The plans, which include tax hikes and pay freezes, have sparked two general strikes and several union rallies in the past weeks.

（法新社布魯塞爾18日電） 希臘 總理巴本德里歐（George Papandreou）今天警告，希臘可能被迫求助於國際貨幣基金（IMF）；他並駁斥德國 以嚴重違反財政規定為由將希臘逐出歐元區的主張。

巴本德里歐在歐洲議會說：「在這個問題上，歐盟 應該出面並表示，『好吧，在此情況下，我們可提供國際貨幣基金所將提供的協助…否則到了最後，希臘就可能必須作出求助國際貨幣基金的選擇』。」

在巴本德里歐昨天暗示、希臘可能會爭取國際貨幣基金的貸款後，歐元在外匯市場即告貶值。某些人士認為，求助國際貨幣基金之舉會破壞市場對整體歐元區的信心。

巴本德里歐對歐元區揚言將希臘逐出的反應，也是同樣尖銳。

他說：「僅僅施以懲罰，可能不是解決問題之道，至於將某個國家逐出以作為懲罰，不但是這個（被逐出）國家的失敗，也是歐盟的失敗。」
