布朗在訪美時再次強調了兩國間的「特殊關係」。英國議會外事委員會發表報告說，英國政府對美國應當「少些順從」，學會更多地說「不」。
報告還說，把英國和美國的關係稱之為「特殊關係」是錯誤的。
報告同時承認，英美之間的關係是「源遠流長的有價值的」。但它強調，「特殊關係」這一說法並不能反應「現代的」英美關係。
這個說法最早來自於60年前英國首相丘吉爾之口。報告說，雖然英美之間關係密切，但英國的影響力已經隨其經濟和軍事力量的下滑而日益減弱。
報告指出，使用具有歷史意義的「特殊關係」一詞形容英美之間全面關係存在誤導，應當盡量避免使用這個說法。
報告說，一些政客和媒體濫用這一說法只會起到貶低其真正含義的作用，容易讓人產生英國人可以從中獲得更多利益的不真實的期待。
報告還說，英國政府在入侵伊拉克前後的做法被廣泛形容為「是華盛頓的走狗」，這極大地損害了英國的利益。
報告建議，英國應當對美國少些順從，學會多說「不」。並說，英美關係的原則應當更多地基於英國的自身利益。

《世界新聞報》突表態不再支持工黨

近期受到一連串工潮困擾、聲望持續低落的英國 首相白高敦 ，又再受到新的打擊。過去13年一直持工黨政府的暢銷報章《世界新聞報》（News of the World）周六突然表態，不再支持工黨政府，因為人民都渴求改變，所以在這一刻應該給予在野保守黨及其黨魁卡梅倫一個機會。
白高敦仍未公布下次舉行大選的日期，但外界普遍預料他會在復活節假期後謁見英女王，向她請示解散國會，並於5月6日舉行大選。工黨和保守黨現在已經密鑼緊鼓，為即將展開的競選運動作好準備，但拉票還未正式開始，工黨已被狠狠地被摑了一巴掌。
《世界新聞報》發表評論文章指出，社會各界都發出呼聲，要求改變，而在野保守黨「為我們帶來最大的希望，有一個更光明、更穩健、更安全和更有尊嚴的未來。現在是給予機會進行改變的時候，朝著更有活力和更有希望的未來前進」。
自從工黨於1997年上台執政以來，前首相貝理雅 參加過三次大選，三次都取得勝利，《世界新聞報》一直站在工黨的一邊。去年9月，該報的姊妹報《太陽報》已經率先表態，轉投保守黨陣營。
白高敦周六前往英格蘭 中部的諾丁漢進行訪問，為大選鋪路。他發表講話，說推動經濟復甦是他的競選運動的核心。
他又許下承諾，在當選連任後，提高家庭生活標準，建立高科技經濟、保障前線公務員及推動社區平等。
《星期日泰晤士報》聯同You Gov民調公司聯合公布的民意調查結果顯示，保守黨現時的支持率達37%，領先工黨的32%。

British lawmakers have urged their government to be 'less deferential' towards the US, stressing that the UK's image as Washington's 'poodle' is highly damaging.
The Commons Foreign Affairs committee in the lower house of parliament issued a report on Sunday calling for a 'hard-headed' approach to the Anglo-American liaison.
The MPs said that the days of 'special relationship', a term coined by Winston Churchill in 1946, were over and that Britain should stop assuming that the priorities of the two nations will always coincide.
The committee added that while ties between the two countries remain close, the UK must be less deferential and more willing to say 'no' to the US in the light of issues in which they may differ.
"The perception that the British government was a subservient poodle to the US administration leading up to the period of the invasion of Iraq and its aftermath is widespread -- both among the British public and overseas," the committee said.
It added that this perception is extremely damaging to the reputation and interests of the UK.
The recent report comes amid increasing criticisms of Britain's role in the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the continuing cost of the war in Afghanistan.
Since the 2001 US-led invasion, over 250 British soldiers have died in Afghanistan, a figure that is now higher than the casualties suffered in the 1982 war over the the Malvinas islands, known as Falkland, with Argentina.
Emerging reports that US secret agents have used British military bases in the Indian Ocean for the extrajudicial transfer of prisoners for interrogation and, reportedly, torture have also added fuel to the flames of public ire.
