Germany can never pay off mountain of debt, reports Bild
Wednesday, 17 March 2010 11:03
Given that Gerrmany's public debt amounted to 1.69 trillion euros in 2009, Bild newspaper asks whether Germany will soon be as bankrupt as Greece.
It sures that way.
In spite of racking up a record public debt, Germany's Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble yesterday unveiled plans to spend 319.5 billion euros in 2010 - 5.4% more than in 2009.
To finance this gigantic budget, Schäuble is planning to take on 80.2 billion euros in credit, a historical record. Half this amount will be needed just to pay the interest on the old debts.
Altogether, 310 billion euros of fresh debts are planned between 2009 and 2013 by Schaüble and Merkel. Interest payments alone for the debts are 41 billion euros a year.
Bild has calculated that Germany can never ever pay off its gigantic mountain of debt, created in part by the financial fraud that was the bank bail out.
Even if the federal government spent 10 billion euros a year to pay off the debt, it would take 100 years to pay off one trillion euros. In addition, the government would have to pay 41 billion euros a year in interest.
The people of Germany should organise, leave the eurozone, set up a new currency and put Schäuble, Merkel, the bankers, credit rating agencies and media bosses into gaol for their role in pushing Germany into perpetual debt slavery and risking the loss of souvereignty under the IMF.

Merkel defends record debt in German 2010 budget
Posted : Wed, 17 Mar 2010 10:23:07 GMT By : dpa
Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel was forced on the defensive Wednesday over her management of the economy, saying the country's unprecedented level of new debt was necessary to counter the economic crisis. Germany's 2010 budget anticipates new debt of 80.2 billion euros (110 billion dollars) - or 25 per cent of the budget. The country's budget deficit is estimated to hit 5.2 per cent of gross domestic product, well above the 3-per cent limit imposed by the European Union on countries which share the euro.
"It is right for people to be concerned about this debt," Merkel said during a parliamentary debate.
However, with the German economy contracting by 5 per cent in 2009, the chancellor said it was necessary to deal with the country's economic downturn.
"None of us have any experience with such a dramatic economic meltdown," Merkel said, adding that Germany had learned from the lessons of the past - in reference to the economic crisis which preceded World War II.
Merkel also defended the centre-right coalition of her Christian Democrats (CDU) with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), saying the speed with which they had drawn up the 2010 budget demonstrated their capability.
Earlier, the opposition Social Democrats attacked the centre-right coalition, with parliamentary leader Frank-Walter Steinmeier saying Germany had "a government that is not governing."
Steinmeier, who acted as foreign minister in Merkel's previous coalition, said the government had gambled away the goodwill granted to it by voters in September's general election.
"Germany has not been governed this badly for decades," Steinmeier said, holding Merkel directly responsible.
The government's first months in office have been marred by public spats over issues including health reform, taxation policies and a controversial museum appointment.
"You are standing in front of the ruins of a broken marriage, everyone can see that," Steinmeier said of the coalition, calling it "the largest non-governmental organization in the country."
Steinmeier's comments opened the annual parliamentary debate on the German budget, an event which is traditionally used by opposition parties to attack the government.
