Congressman pushes for former President Ronald Regan to be immortalised on the U.S. $50 bill

A bid to change the face of America’s currency has come under fire from US historians and politicians.

Republican Congressman Patrick McHenry has introduced a new law to replace Ulysses S. Grant with Ronald Reagan on the $50 bill.

The change is designed to coincide with next year’s 100th anniversary of Reagan’s birth.

But Democrats on the House Financial Services Committee, which will vote on the measure, complain they aren’t ready to replace the Civil War general and 18th president with a former Hollywood star whose political legacy is still open to question.

Democrat lawmaker Brad Sherman said he will not vote for a note change for someone ‘whose policies are still controversial'.
‘Our currency ought to be something that unites us,’ he added.
‘I’m very upset,’ added Keya Morgan, a historian who created a web page in memory of Grant. ‘I have all the respect in the world for Reagan, but what he accomplished is not anywhere near as important as what Ulysses S. Grant accomplished.’
But Congressman McHenry insisted: ‘Every generation needs its own heroes. ‘President Reagan is indisputably one of the most transformative presidents of the 20th century.
'Like President Roosevelt on the dime and President Kennedy on the half dollar, President Reagan deserves a place of honour on our nation’s currency.

U.S. banknotes have not been changed for more than 80 years. So stubborn are U.S. citizens that they refuse to retire the $1 bill in favour of a coin of the same value despite the fact the move would save $50million a year.
Joining Grant on the country's paper money are George Washington ($1), Abraham Lincoln ($5), inaugural treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton ($10), Andrew Jackson ($20) and inventor and diplomat Benjamin Franklin ($100).
The most change came in 1929, when $500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 and $100,000 bills were briefly produced.
It is not the first time Republicans have tried to put Reagan’s face on US money. Efforts to have the 40th president on the $20 bill and the dime coin both failed.
Regan was immensely popular as President, boasting one of the highest approval ratings in history.
The drama of his acting days appeared to follow him into office, with the Iran Hostage Crisis ending while he was giving his inaugural as President, and just two months later he survived an assassination attempt in which he was shot in the chest.
