The United States is stepping up pressure on Tokyo to come to a quick conclusion over the relocation of US troops in Japan.
Visiting US Senator Jim Webb said on Monday that a solution needed to be found quickly.

In 2006, Washington and Tokyo agreed to relocate US troops stationed at Futenma Marine airfield from the larger city of Ginowan in Okinawa to the smaller town of Nago.
However, the new Japanese government that took office last September announced that it would decide on the deal by May.
Webb, a member of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, said the main purpose of his visit was to listen to the views of the Japanese government.

"There could be a number of practical options," Webb said. "I don't want to outline those options today because I don't want to cut short the discussions that we're going to have."

Although the US senator called for a solution which considers the "well-being of the citizens," he insisted that the disputed US base remain in Okinawa. This is while Okinawans firmly demand the base be removed from the island.

Accidents and crimes committed by US service personnel in close proximity to residential areas have turned the local population of Okinawa against the presence of the US forces there.

The rape of a schoolgirl by three US servicemen infuriated the island's residents and demands that the base be closed on safety grounds rose when a US helicopter crashed on the campus of a local university in 2004.
